fuel pickup question. crank seal question.

Post by RAT540 »

what should the length of the pickup tube be inside the gas tank, and should it lay in front of the glove box or run down the side of the tank and glove box, this is on a 79 trailfire
pulled it all apart and the tube that was off and pretty much brittle and fell apart, someone before me used the clear fuel line as pickup tube, the check valve ,the screen was gone and so was the check ball.
also changing crank seals, any thing special i should know when changing them, they put on dry or with some kinda lube?
thanks dave

I think the pick up line lays across the front of the tank from right to left and there might be a slight channel if I remember right. 12"- 15" is probably plenty.

I don't use any lube to put them in, but I always split the case and set them in. But I have seen some just push them in from the end. Never seen lube used.

You should lube the seal lips (the part that touches the crank) with grease when you assemble the lower end. This prevents friction between the shaft and the dry rubber seal from burning the lips.

I can't disagree. Makes perfect sense and I will follow this suggestion from now on.
