151" Liquifire

Post by toocheaptosmoke »

This is for Horicon Joe. Still have a few things to finish before I drag it back out of the shop and get some better pics, took it to a hill climb race last sunday and left a lot of loose ends just to get it running.

Is that a 617 or 670 in there. I was considering doing a 136" renegade liquifire. I parted out a 96 skandic long track and I could almost just rivet the tunnel to the liquifire bulk head to it.

I'll get some better pics of the engine mounting, I was making a video documentary for a while but then I started running out of time and barely got it together in time to race. :bonk:

The engine is attached to a TX 340 motor plate, bolt patterns are the same. Then I re-formed it in the press a bit and mounted it to the tunnel and a couple spacer blocks down in the bellypan.

To make the track fit, I had to use the doo chaincase, drop and roll it, press some kawasaki 8 tooth drivers onto the doo driveshaft, remove the front heat exchanger and cut the pinch seam, then chop and section the top of the tunnel.

Not sure why the pics are getting cut off on the right side?

Things were a tight fit, the hammer was a vital part of this build. The main donor sled was a wrecked/blown up '93 ski-doo mach 1.
Image

Used the stock jackshaft location, went to 12" center distance on the clutches. Must of had the engine in and out 50 times mocking up the mounting position to get the alignment and orientation right.
Image

Brake rotor clears the tunnel by, well, not much. Shaved down the one brake pad so it would clear. The jackshaft also just barely clears the newly formed tunnel. Also had to move the steering column over about 1/2" to clear the mag side carb.
Image

I started chopping up the original y-pipe, but the socket joint was pretty well sacked out. In the search for a replacement I found out that some model sleds came with an angled mounting position to begin with. So, I got one of those and ran it upside down.
Image

Had to cut reliefs in the motor plate to clear the carb bowls. Carbs are sitting at about 25* so I adjusted the floats to compensate.
Image

Lower motor mounts are a couple chunks of square tubing I found in the scrap pile. Coolant hose just barely fits in there. Also added in a torque arm to help control the beast.
Image

Image

Here you can see where the tunnel arches up to clear the track. Yes, that is duct tape sealing up some of the gaps to keep snow out of the belly pan.
Image

Gratuitous use of zip ties.

Had a new aftermarket windshield I tried to sell for a while, good thing it never did, so I chopped it. Then took a cue from the stones and painted it black.
Image

Seat is from an '83 TXL cross country, gas tank a citation 4500, all sourced from the random parts pile out back.
Image

Precision skis converted to leaf springs
Image

Looks stock to me.
Image

Doo gauges in the original pod. Had to run the coolant lines over the tank because the exchangers are so far back in the tunnel.
Image

Silencer is the cheapest glasspack I could get from Summit, like $11. I uses some parts of the old can to make it fit, even used the stock exhaust outlet.
Image

Tunnel was extended about 16" and was accomplished by splicing and dicing the ass end of a phazer onto it. The suspension is a couple of 1980's polaris skids grafted together, then moved back about 5" within the tunnel.
