What am I doing wrong????

Post by Mailman »

I've been working on my 81 sportfire with which I had had electrical problems with before (brown wire from stator getting hot). I replaced the stator with a new one hooked the wirers up as per wiring diagram, brown wire from stator to black wire to ground. When I got everything together and tried to start it (electric start) the brown wire would start to get warm when I turned the key all the way over, didn't seem to bother if the key was just on only when I tried to engage the starter. I haven't tried to start it manually yet and I have checked the instructions that came with the electric start kit and everything seems to be where it should just can't figure out what I have wrong or am doing wrong or what to look for. This one has got me stumped ANYBODY got any ideas. Thanks :x :bonk:

How is your eng grounded? Do you have the battery cable grounded to the actual engine or the frame?

It's grounded to the frame.

All electric starts need a ground cable from the battery to the engine or the frame to the engine.

The engine sits on rubber isolation blocks to prevent vibration.. These rubber blocks do not pass current so the ground is forced through your wiring harness ground wire and to the stator plate which is at engine ground. Hence a hot or melted brown/black wire.

Grab a 8 Gauge ground cable from NAPA or whereever for $5 and problem solved.

I would suggest grounding it to both the engine & frame..

Just my $.0675 worth

Grumpy has once again pointed out my issue with poor explanations.

In addition to the ground cable from the battery to the frame there should be a second cable from the frame to the engine or the battery to the engine.

Well got the cable hooked up from the engine to the frame and it worked like a charm. I don't know why it worked before without being grounded but it did. Could of been grounded some how and it didn't show up until after the red stator wire broke and I took the motor out to fix it then didn't get a good ground after that. Bottom line is that it works now and that's what matters. One question though and that is does this rule of thumb apply to all JD electric start sleds or just the "Fire" series? The reason I ask is that my JDX4 is electric start and I know that it's not grounded also and would a person want to ground it to be on the safe side? Once again thanks for all the help and ideas.

Any sled with an electric starter needs a ground cable from to the engine(starter) and the chassis(frame).
