JD model 500

Post by Greendude »

Hello, I am new to John Deere sleds. I recently acquired a 72 model 500 to restore and I am courious as to how compatible a 73 JDX8 is parts wise. I may be able to pick one of these up. If someone can let me know I would appreciate it. Hopefully as I go along I will become more familiar with the various JD models. Thanks in advance for the help!

The simple answer is: not much. The 72s look the same as the later models, and parts interchange, but little is the same.

The track, rear axle assembly, bogies and shafts, are the same.

What does your 500 need?

Thanks for the reply!
We have not gotten into it yet, but the tunnel, boogies, track, etc look okay. The chain case is apart, but it looks like all the parts are there in plastic bags. The main thing I notice missing is some of the black plastic shrouds around the engine, needs a new seat, and a tail light assembly. I am sure it may need more as I get into it.

The seat, and plastic engine shroud pieces are '72 specific, as is the tail light. The tail light you can probably find NOS.

Photos would be helpful.

I have a few NOS tail lights if you need one. The 72's are smaller than the 73-84's that you can still buy at the dealer.

Have fun restoring your 500. As Brian said, they have lots of little details that make them unique from the 73 and up sleds. I should also have some clutch and motor parts for them depending on what you may need.

Thanks for the input. It is much appreciated. Took a quick look at links you sent. Will look at closer when at home. Looks like I have a bit to learn about Deeres, but I will trudge ahead on this and learn as I go.

Okay gang, I need a little additional info. After investigating a few sites I found serial numbers for Deere's and some descriptions. Now I am wondering what year I have. The serial number starts with 12000 which is 73, and I have catches at the front of the seat for hold down (which I saw was a difference between 72 & 73), and the tail light is about 6" wide (which someone mentioned was a difference in 73), but I have the round head light ( a site I found said 73 had rectangular). Now I wonder if I have a hodge-podge sled. Unfortunately there was no paper work with this sled so I can only go by info I m collecting. Any input would be appreciated. Sorry for being a little "slow" on this subject, but this is not AC or Chap's which I am familiar with. Thanks for your help!

Your info was wrong. The rectangular head light was specific to the '72 model year.

Thanks! I appreciate the input. Like I said, I am still learning. Looks more like I have a 73 instead of the 72 I was told when I bought. I am sure I will be asking some more dumb questions as I go along. Glad I found this place for good information!

PIcs, Pics, Pics,,,,,

That will solve everything.

If you have a 73 then parts are much easier to find.

If you have a 72 it is rarer machine.

Green,

You can also check the SN and Build date that should be stamped into the side of the tunnel. For the Model 500, a SN below 11,000 is 72 model year, built in the summer/fall of 1971, while a 1973 model year sled has a SN from 11,001-20,000 with a build date in the summer/fall of 1972.

Also, you can still buy the service manual for those sleds new from Deere, or keep an eye on ebay or the classifieds here for a used one. SM-2100 covers the 100 series, JDX's and the 295/s from 72-74.

I hope this helps,

Yes I looked at the serial number and it is in the 12000's, so I have a 73. That ends that round. Now the fun starts. I am going to take some pictures this weekend as my grandson and I start disassembling the sled. One of the first things I know I need is a pair of year correct skis. The one that came with it are a mismatch, and in very bad shape. Also will be in need of the gas tank gauge.
Thanks again to all of you who have taken the time to offer assistance. It is very much appreciated. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!

The correct skis were only used in '73. Any of the skis with a flat top loop will look reasonably correct, but the skis used on the '73s have some slight differences.

Jesse B had NOS tank gauges at one time.
Actually it was his parents that were selling them on ebay but he should have acess to them.
