My first tear down 340/5

Since I like seeing pics of everybodys work in progress here's what I'm up to at the kitchen table currently. I'm not that great with motors so if you see something out of place say something. Here's where I'm at:
There is a skiroule clutch on it and I need a puller 9/16" - 18. If someone knows a skiroule collector in my area(Niagara-Hamilton) they can have the clutch for free.

Lots of gasket glue everywhere. Carb is apart soaking. I bought the wrong flywheel puller. doh! I don't think this thing ran for very long after it was put back together. I notice the one piston has a bit of a whole starting.

So once newbreed opens up again here's what i have so far for my list.
Carb kit, gasket kit, crank seals, pistons and rings, comet puller. Am i missing something?

Looks goods so far.

I have had great luck using Yamaseal (Yamaha brand sealant) for the crankcase halves
Several Deere's
Several Kawasaki's

It looks like you took the clutch apart on the crank - now I don't know how that Skiroule clutch works, but on Comets, if you take them that far apart, the puller is no use because the threads that the puller uses are on the outer sheave. I think your only option now is to cut it off - but again, I don't know the Skiroule clutches.

Also, heads up that I (New Breed) do not have those piston/ring sets. CCW aftermarket pistons have not been available for some time. Hopefully someone here has some NOS or good used 340/5 parts and can help you out.

Get yourself a hardened 9/16" x 18 bolt and a piece of hard shaft that will fit into the bore of the clutch shaft.
The length should be such that you can use the max amount of thread just befoe the bolt makes contact with the shaft.
This will prevent stripping the threads.

Use some penitrating oil on everything. Appy the impact wrench to torque it up.
If it does not pop off than give it a the bolt a smack with a BFH.

Another option is to pack the clutch hole with grease and just screw the bolt in.
The grease takes on hydrualic properties.
It gets messy when she pops off so you may not want to do this on the kitchen table.

I'm not sure there ever was a Skiroule clutch tool per se. Todd's advice is what I've typically heard. Anyone know different?

The grease tactic works quite well, Ive used it on 4 clutches and works everytime

Thanks for the replys. I've got the 9/16-18 bolt and piece of shaft coming tomorrow and I'll try the grease method first. I worry with my luck and reading some posts of caution about the shaft idea possibly hurting the crank and i get free grease at work. I did some homework on the puller and the best i could find was that, a "9 post cat puller" works?
Hey just a thought, but at work on the excavator to tighten the track up you pump grease into a zerk in the undercarriage and it pushes the track cylinder open and hence it tightens the track up. That takes alot of pressure and i wonder if one were to make some sort of fitting to thread into the end of the shaft you could possibly just pop clutches off with a grease gun?? Just a thought.

Water or oil can be used instead of grease. Water is easiest to clean up

You will never get enough pressure from a grease gun to pop a clutch.
