Got some '84? Sportfire parts today.

Post by Matt331 »

So, in a local ad a guy was selling a track for an '83 JD (By the way it's an all rubber track - no cleats). I inquired because I figured I could use a spare track for my '81 Trailfire...his price was very reasonable. Then he says it came off of and he has more parts for an '83 Sportfire. I get a bit excited because I've always wanted an '83. So I go. I get there and in short, he has a very disassembled and no seat, "borrowed" junk hood off an '81 Trailfire, suspension gone, '84 Sportfire. The tunnel is stamped 11/83 so I figured it's an '84. In short I got everything but the chassis, suspension, seat, hood, bulkhead, steering linkage, and a few other minor things. So I got an engine, carb, clutches, drive shaft, handlebars, TRACK, etc.

Here's the number off the motor: TA440B-E202

Is that an '84 Sportfire motor?

The guy said it had been re-sleeved so who knows what else is going on inside the motor. Big picture, I assume things like chaincase, motor stuff, starter, carb, etc, etc, etc, will be pretty interchangeable with my Trailfire if need be? I'd like to keep things as original as possible on it (my Trailfire), but I figured I just bought a bunch of spare parts.

Also, the tunnel is about to be scrapped. The front holes in the tunnel where the suspension mounts have been drilled out and all goobered up so it would never be a show sled. I almost bought it all to restore it, but again, no belly pan, junk hood, no suspension, etc, I figured I'd have better luck turning my '81 Trailfire into a '84 Sportfire if I wanted.

Thoughts everybody? Did I find the remnants of an '84 Sportfire?

Looking forward to expert opinions!!!

It is most likely a 84 Sportfire. No matter what you do to the Trailfire its always going to be a Trailfire. The money is with the serial number the rest of the sled can always be fixed. Please save it. Maybe in the future you will find a place for it. Use it to trade for Trailfire parts. Sleds that I had no interest in 5yrs ago are big on my collection list now. Dont let it get away.

Trailfire and Sportfire are different engines so nothing is interchangeable except the pistons and maybe a few other misc pieces. Maybe ignition. Different crank, cylinders, carb. There is nothing particular that's special about the '84 engine that is different from the rest of the years. TASKY is right on that the only thing really desirable about it is the '84 tunnel & serial number.

Before I go through the trouble of picking up this tunnel which is a 70 mile round trip for me, let me describe it again. It has been separated from the bulkhead in preparation for scrap. There are several holes near the front mounting area because they put a Cat suspension in it. They had a steel plate bolted in to mount the suspension. There were also some holes drilled about a foot forward of the back for what appeared to be some sort of rack/grab bar? The bulkhead is there, including skis (no belly pan), for now. The guy says he plans on removing the steering linkage for a go-cart project.

The other thing is that I live in Northern Utah. Is anyone going to come here to pick it up? How much is it worth to people? Since it sounds like not much of these parts are good for a Trailfire, does anybody want them? I heard the Track won't even fit on the Trailfire. Will the track fit on other year Sportfires? Feel free to call me at 435-890-0238. I'm not looking to make any money other than a little time and gas. As far as all the parts I have, I make NO guarantees on the engine (other than it does turn over) or ignition.

Thanks,
Matt

The track will fit your trailfire, need to change out the driveshaft with the one from the sportfire.
Go snatch up that tunnel, it's aluminum so it can be fixed. Lots of welding and sanding and someone will make it usable.
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.
