John Deere TR 800 Clutch

Post by T White »

Hi Guys,

I just spoke with Jim Graft from CPC about all the TR 800's out there with worn out bushings, as you probably know he bought all the rights to Comet Clutches a few years ago. Anyway I told him about our problem and he wants to help.

What we need are pictures of the clutch and the parts that are needed and also any associated part numbers, JD or Comet. We might as well shoot for the moon here so if there are any other parts beside the bushings we need include those also.

He told me he was able to get all the files from Comet when he bought it so hopefully he will be able to locate the ones we need.

Let me know if you can help.

Tom

Ok I talked to a machinest. I was going to use oilite bronze material he can machine them to press in then do a final bore on them to fit. But would require the clutch taken apart. I don't have prices yet maybe next week

There's been quite a bit of talk over the past couple years about "something in the works" for reproducing the M68862 TR800 clutch cover bushing, but that's been about it. (See link below)

I still have a few NOS M68862 bushings and have offered to provide one for reproduction. That offer still stands if the effort goes further with a manufacturer.

Tom - the bushing is on the way to CPC today. Hopefully with both the new bushing and the original Comet part number we can have something soon.

Has anyone determined why the bushings wear out so fast on these clutches?

Great question Sledder670. Always wondered about this myself. Not sure that I would even use the TR800 as I'm getting used to removing them and throwing them in a pile. I like the tune ability of the newer 108exp and have these on all my riders.

If the goal is to have a period correct machine that doesn't really get ridden I can understand maybe wanting to keep a TR800 on it. If your'e going to ride it more than 50 miles a year, put the TR800 on a shelf, put a 108exp on it and support the company that's making them. The TR800 doesn't hold up well, isn't tunable with the lack of springs and other parts available, and is obnoxiously noisy. You also should have the HSR ignition if your'e going to run it, otherwise the motor lacks the low end torque needed to really take advantage of the lower engagement. In my opinion the EXP is superior in every way and makes these sleds much more of a pleasure to ride.

My two cents

I agree. It's been my experience with the TR that keeps it as a trailer queen piece only. The EXP size and width makes it harder to switch belts, but the superior performance and reliability overcome the minor inconveniences of dealing with the tight chassis situation. I wonder if the smooth engagement of the TR has something to do with the reliability issues because the ones I've used seem to "slip into gear" and sometimes cause a whiff of belt burn. A friend of mine had an '83 and all he did was rebuild his TR until he shelved it for a 108C.

Hi Guys,

Great news, thanks to Jay Grafft at CPC, Matt and Randy these bushings should be available in The New Breed Snowmobile Parts Store in about 4 to 6 weeks. If there is enough demand the movable face bushings could also be made available.

Matt is going out on a limb to fill the minimum order for these bushings so please help him out by ordering a bushing or two if you think you could use them.

Randy, please PM me with your address so I can get your donor bushing returned to you when CPC is finished with it.

Tom

Good work Tom. Is the movable face bushing or the cover bushing going to be available?
