BTDC timing micrometer

Post by Waterboy7 »

I'm curious if anyone knows where I can find a Before Top Dead Center micrometer for timing? I,ve looked around and can't really find anything. And a timing light for timing point and condenser setups, let me know! -Rylie :D

Rylie a normal induction timing light will work and I had the same problem getting tdc. I used my caliper while I turned the engine once I found tdc I added .0005 and turned until it bottomed out then I set the plate and marked it with a chisel. Call me and I can explain better Jeff :usa:

I have a set similar to this for the TDC measurement:

The magnetic base is useless for these engines so you need a metal base of some kind to attach it to next to the engine.

I guess I got lucky a few years back. When I was looking for a dial indicator set up, there was a bunch of them for sale on ebay. I bought a Starret timing kit for around $60 I think. It was used, but I couldn't tell it from new. Very similar to the first one Grumpy has listed.

You need a spark plug adaptor and the proper length extension for the dial indicator. Then finding TDC is a snap, and then you just rotate the engine backwards to get to the proper BTDC.

As to the timing light...for a points engine, you can make one really cheap out of a flashlight, some wire, a couple of alligator clips, and some duct tape ( you gotta have the duct tape).
