The 80-82 Trailfire stator, cdi, and coil is the same as the 80-81Liquifire. The Sportfire used a different stator and cdi for all years. Have you disconnected the rev limiter? When you are trying to accelerate, flip the choke and see what the sled's reaction is. If it runs better, you are lean. If it bogs more, you are rich. No result, and it is probably not your carbs. Out of curiosity, have you had the engine apart? What condition is the exhaust pipe? It may look good from the outside, but if the internal cone is rotted out, you will have very poor upper rpm performance.

Out of curiosity, what jets did you install since there was an update in '82 ?

Danzig, I have a trail fire with a sporty engine in it I haven't completed yet. It is on the back burner until my LF is done. I was just curious if the stator in the sporty could be used to try in the LF or where can I get a new one for my LF?

I did the jetting to the 81 tech manual. 40 pilots. 105 and 110 power jets. Can't remember the main jets off the top of my head though. Yes it has a new belt on it.

The Sportfire stator may or may not be different. I think it depends on the year of the Sportfire engine.
If you switch stator and flywheel it should work.
That being said. I doubt you will see a difference. It sounds more like a air or fuel issue to me.

Yeah hard to tell what's going on. Clutching or it could be a fuel issue. Maybe its not getting enough fuel when under load...???
Tighten up the secondary as tight as it will go. May also want to confirm the gears in the chaincase.

Eric, I tried tightening the secondary as you said. It would get to 6000-6500 rpm and maintain less than 30 mph. Engine wanted to die. Have to feather the throttle to keep any movement of the sled. From a standstill wot will kill it. It isnt running lean. How can i tell if it is rich? Take the airbox off?

What do the spark plugs look like?

let's go back to the carbs. You said that the power jets were removed when you started working on it. Did it have regular bowls on the carbs or were the power jet passages blocked?

Did you clean out the passages? There should gas visible about 1/2 way up in the hose from the bottom of the bowl .

You may be on to something. I dont recall seeing any gas in them. Didnt know there was supposed to be. I have them off. I'll take them apart and clean them again. Just revisiting old topics, downtime at work lol. So My 80 LF acted just like this this year. She would get to 6500rpms and then slowly go down from there and only top out around 40mph, and she would hesitate up and down when giving her the onion lol. What was happening is she was flooding herself out. She would be crisp and fast at first but then after everything was warmed up, crap shoot. My external coil had some cracks in the wire and I feel heat was transferring through the rubber insulation after 5mins of running her and causing poor spark. Well I put on a different used external coil and that took care of the hesitation, but it was still loading with fuel. Now the carbs had all correct jetting and new guts but all I did was take off the rubber U hose off the airbox to lean it out slightly and it awoke the beast! 75mph on the gps. Now I just have to just put the primary clutch back to stock cause she engages at 5500rpms and uses belts too quickly! If your still out there Ryker maybe you will see this for a case study.
