Broke clutch puller.

Post by fastl82vette »

Has anyone ever snapped a clutch puller with an impact wrench? Was working on a liquifire with a tr800 and the clutch wouldn't budge. After a little while, the puller snapped!! Luckily after spraying the backside with some WD and a 30 minute wait, we tapped on it with a 2x4 and a hammer and it popped off.
I thought we were screwed there for a little while!! :bonk:

If it was a genuine "Comet" puller I'm very surprised. If it's not then I'm not surprised at all.

I am not sure. My father in law had it in his tool box for years from when he used to work on them.

I loaned out my genuine comet puller. When it found it's way home. It had a very noticible bend.

I picked up one of the clutch holder tools. Then use a 1/2" breaker bar with a cheater bar.

I found this method works really well.

Then the clutch holder works when installing the primary to get the correct intallation torque.

But looking at that bent puller...Im surprised the threads didnt get pulled out of the clutch. :bonk:

I stripped the threads off a similar clutch puller trying to get a Sal off a 300. That was just using a big breaker and a cheater as it was out in the shed where I couldn't get at it with an impact. Next step will be to try and get the cover off to see if any of the springs and cams are salvageable. Fixed sheave is most certainly not!

In my experience, grease down the hole works best for stubborn clutches that don't want to come off. Pump some grease down the hole, put your puller or a bolt in, and crank away. They pop off every time. No need for an impact or hammers. Hydraulic action at its best.
