New to the forum and I didn't see this asked/ansered in the FAQ area.
Anyway I have a chance to pick up a '73 JDX4 for next to nothing. Is there anything in particular that I should be on the lookout for that might relegate the sled to parts only status? I haven't had a chance to actually see it in person yet and will get a chance Sunday. I do know the seat vinyl is cracked (purely cosmetic) the windshield is cracked and it needs a brake band. It does (? so i've been told) starts, runs, moves. Thank you for any help/guidance.

Re: '73 JDX4 new to me
Hello Bob, and welcome to jdsleds.com.
The 73 JDX-4 was a unique (in an odd way) sled. It had a steel tunnel, yet was the first application of an aluminum front bumper and aluminum centered idler wheels, and the first Deere sled powered by a Kohler motor, the K295-2AX. It was Deere's entry level sled for 1973.
Aside from the typical old sled issues with crank seals, fuel system cleaning, chassis bearings, etc, the main killer of 73 JDX-4's is tunnel rust. Deere only built 2 sleds with entirely steel chassis, the 73 JDX-4 and the 79 Trailfire 340 and 440. I have seen guys take rusted JDX-4's and rebuild them onto 73 JDX-8 aluminum chassis as a repair.
Good luck with your sled,
-Joe Rainville
