Clutch center to center and offset specifications

Post by Vmax540 »

Did some searching for the clutch center to center and offset specifications for a 1980 Liquifire with varing success so, if there is a section with this information please, point me in the right direction. I completely rebuilt a 102 off one of my Vmax540's since the original Comet had grooves worn in the sheaves, the (Thinner webbing than normal Comet) spider was warped from heating.... and the John Deere cover plate needed a bushing. I used the B weights since they were in good shape and it came to me with the square(?) yellow Comet spring. I see some use a Purple Comet spring ? I have at least two different purple springs Comet springs from experimenting with the 540's so, if you recommend the purple, which # and what are the engagement and shift rpms I should be shooting for on a stock 1980 Liquifire ? I noticed after tightening the clutch on to 85ft Lbs then backing off to 47 ft Lbs. the primary is very close to a frame bolt head on the front side of the clutch and the rear side is further away definitely need the spec's. ? Lastly, which belt is correct / best ? Thanks for any help !

I rebuilt a 102 for my 80LF this Summer. I got a new purple spring from newbreedparts.com A new spring could raise your engagement rpms slightly because it takes more effort on the motors part to compress it. Stock "Arms/Weights" for the 80LF are B-1. I used notched weights and I would have to look at the weights I don't remember what they weighed exactly but they are not stock specs and my engagement is 5,000 rpm which is very high....in fact too high because you can smell a little belt burn off the line because it is spinning so fast when it grabs the belt. Stock engagement is usually around 4,400-4,600 at sea level I believe but someone can correct me. Usually guys here idle there LF's at 3,000 rpms. I would have to only guess at my shift rpms due to no snow to test much!!! but I would say around 5,500-6,000... You can get this belt for the 80LF from Dennis Kirk. Parts Unlimited 1 1/4 in. x 47 1/8 in. Super-X Drive Belt - LMX-1107 its what I use. As far as your clutch to frame distance. some 102's have a deeper taper than others.....hence why it could be sitting so close to your frame. http://www.vintagesnow.com/John_Deere_f ... Manual.pdf in section 50-20 you will find clutching offset specifications for the 80LF and also belt deflection.

You want the stronger purple spring. A few years ago I somehow got a hold of the lighter one. I don't have the comet number handy at the moment but can look it up later.

I'm going to retract my previous comment. Deere #M68887 crosses to Comet # 20788a which is rated @ 226 lbs when compressed 1-1/8". The other purple spring (207758a) is rated at 254 lbs @ 1-1/8".

For what its worth, I would not over torque the clutch, it may swell the taper, which may put it close to the frame as you mention. Best to torque to spec, run it a short bit and re-torque. Hope you have enough shims behind your secondary to get it aligned.
