82 Sportfire 440
Hey guys. I really hate to do this, but I have no time for my 82 John Deere Sportfire.
I have taken the engine apart and gone through everything. I had the block and heads tanked and bead blasted. It has new rings and wrist pins. Everything had checked out fine. Someone had put a new piston in one side at some point.
Pros:
New CDI
New Coil
New fuel pump
New taller windshield
Lights all work
Newer shock and springs in the back
Track is in really good shape
Ski's are in decent shape
Carb was completely gone through last winter
It always started within 2 pulls, no matter how cold it was
New brake pads
New bearings in idler wheels
I kept it in a heated garage. (Don't know how much that helps, if any)
Cons:
Someone put an earlier hood on it with the round glass bulb
Hood needs paint, it's flaking off
It needs bushings where the skis meet the spindles. I have been told John Deere still has these available
Seat is torn, in typical snowmobile fashion.
Speedometer doesn't work. I checked the drive shaft bearings, and they are tight. That's all the further I looked into it.
I have a little over $600 in it, but am looking to get $500.
I haven't started it yet this year. I has stabil in the tank and was ran out of gas with the tank shut off. If someone is interested, I will make sure it is fired up and ready before they make the trip.
I really don't want to let it go, but I had hoped to have all of the "cons" taken care of before winter. Unfortunately, I've been working on a side business and it is taking all of my free time. It was a really good sled for me and got me hooked on the sport. I would consider any trades for something a little newer with better part availability.
I will look for some pictures on my external hard drive to post a little later. I have a few videos of riding it I can post.
Thanks for looking.

I don't think so, not with the new parts you put into it. Give it some more time.

It would help with the correct hood.
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.

Re: 82 Sportfire 440
Thanks Matt. I was just thinking about it today. I hardly ever see these sleds on Craigslist, so I didn't know if I was way off base.
I believe you can change out the light and surround and it would be correct, wouldn't it?

Yes. I have an 82 sportfire hood but I don't know how you would get it.

Re: 82 Sportfire 440
I bet the shipping on that would be phenomenal.
I believe it needs this:
http://www.newbreedparts.com/newbreed/i ... arch=light
And this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-DEERE- ... 1049744920
To make it correct.
I think I'm going to fire it up tomorrow and take it for a spin. Like I said, I don't really want to get rid of it, but I also don't want it to sit unfinished. It's unfortunate how priorities sometimes change.

Re: 82 Sportfire 440
Sadly James its just not in the cards right now for me. Last sled I need to complete my 82' lineup. Never thought I would need 1. I have parted probably 6 or 7 out so others live. I have a very nice 82' hood here to that would go nicely on it. Lots going on so gonna have to wait.

I actually have everything needed in a kit, I had it off the site because I ran out of headlights but I just got more:mustanglx_1989 wrote:I bet the shipping on that would be phenomenal.

Not that actually reduces the value of the sled. More likely the rough paint and decals would.

Re: 82 Sportfire 440
I thought I saw the kit before hand. I'm glad it's back. Your store has helped tremendously. I'm glad you take the time to do it, Matt.
I got it out this morning. Filled the tank and about 12 pulls to get gas to the carb and it fired right up. I let it warm up while I turned it around and was able to ride it out of the barn it's been sitting it.
The only new problem is the gas shut off valve is seeping now. It must have dried out while it was sitting.
I took a few pictures of it...

I'd also be interested in a usable 2 place trailer...
