Looking for a Spitfire track

Post by Fairchild »

Hello,

I'm looking for a great condition track (116"x15"x2.0" pitch) for my '78 Spitfire.

I believe this is the same track for the Snowfire, Sprintfire, 79-80 Trailfire and 80 Sportfire.

I would also be interested in a used Kimpex track of these specs, I believe they used to make them.

:beers;

Or any ideas about a possible track upgrade? I know the 2.00" pitch is a problem to find. Could I modify this sled and make a 2.52" pitch gear work, it seems more possibilities for a track open up. I am good with metal and know a good machinist...... Just brainstorming at work, haven't had much time at home to dive into the project yet! Thanks.

the small front drive sprockets on the Spitfires, Snowfires, and Sprintfires, need a thin in thickness track to get around them successfully in sub zero temperatures to drive the track on the direct drive sleds. You can change the sled over to another style track and drivers, but you would need to convert the sled over to a chaincase, as just larger drive cogs being added will take the gear ratio (if you will) and throw it out the window. It will cause the sled to be boggy and such when trying to get it moving. It can be done, but will take some creative carpentry. That is why John Deere used such a thin track on these little sleds. Hope this helps explain...Rob.

Ty,

Let me do some digging in the parts stash, I think I have an early Trailfire/Sportfire track in good shape.

Make sure to measure the width. I seem to remember the Trialfire/Sportfire cleated track being wider. Spitfire track will fit the Trailfire/Sportfire. One fits one but not the other. Best to check.

Yeah from what I have read the earlier Trailfire/Sportfire,.... the years I mentioned above should be the same track width as the Spitfire.

Thanks for all the info and digging for parts! I sure appreciate it and will verify the correct width before we move forward.

I think only the 79 Trailfire track will work on a Spitfire. 80 up are too wide I believe. I have a couple used 79 Trailfire tracks. I'd part with one but I need to keep one for a spare for my Sprintfire and Snowfire.

The trailfire/sportfire tracks up to 1980 will fit. Same width. 81- up are the wider ones.

Ok, Duane and Stephen, could you guys send me some pics of the track you have and check that they are 15" wide..... and how much you would want for them?

The original post and Rob are correct, the Trailfire/Sportfire tracks up to 1980 fit the DD sleds. The wider 81-84 cleated track rubs the tunnel.
