Not much info found for 76 JD 400

Post by RootsTXL »

I found a very nice 76 JD 400 and cant seem to find much information on wether or not this was a good year for this model? I would think that the reeds and cdi would make it a greatly improved version of prior years. It isn't running yet and I am not all that wild about the Walbro that came stock on it. I know it is sacrilege but I would love to install a Mikuni on it and call it a reliable rider. Not sure where to start with the jetting though.

What was the horse power on these? Would you suggest ski spreaders?

Thanks - been a long time!

Hey Steve, as far as a good year for the model - yes if you wanted a 400 it's a great year, the plastic tank was a good improvement over the steel, and I think they had CDI at that point? 34 HP. The Walbro is fine once you get all the passages cleaned out and the metering valve lever right. No ski spreaders. You use your body weight to steer these sleds more then the steering.

Coming to F&S?

Thanks Matt,

I have not declared ownership of the 76 400 yet. I am impressed by it though. 34hp is not shabby at all for the old sled. This one is very nice. Been stored indoors since new. Even at that the seat cover still shows cracking just before the hump. I am going to have it in my garage here shortly. The current owner wants me to see if I can get it to run again. Hasn't ran in years. Upon my first inspection I found blue RTV sandwiched between each of the fuel pump plates. I need to locate a rebuild kit for the carb. You are right, Walbro and Tillitson carbs do run pretty nicely when clean and set properly. It doesn't have ski spreaders on it now. If I take ownership of it I am wondering if they will make enough of a difference to make it worth the effort.

No, not going to make it to F&S. I have a few sleds that I need to move and that doesn't seem to be the show to do it, parts sometimes, complete sleds no. The F&S is the same date as the NJ Show again this year. I moved two sleds at the NJ show last year and saw quire a few others go home on a different trailer than which they came in on! I'm taking two 72 TNT's specifically.

Can't blame you for going to the NJ show. I really wish they didn't land on the same date. The PSSA show should be a good place to move some sleds I would think.

I have the fuel pump kits in my New Breed Store. I'll hopefully be at the PSSA show if your going and I can bring one.

Here is the sled. It is dirty in this photo. This is how it came home, before it received a bath! I would like to unload this sled. She runs great. I will list it in the classifieds shortly.
