Vmax 540 clutch question

Post by monte44 »

I've been reading about how the vmax 540 102c metric comet clutch seems to work the best on the 540. Any truth to this? Also what yamaha sleds used the metric comet. I have one off of a srv. It has the yamaha stamped on the cover. Will the srv comet work on the vmax with weight/spring change? I've read a lot of unhappy people with 108's on their vmax. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Yep, after all the problems with the '81 SRX, Yamaha swallowed their pride and had Comet provide the drive clutches for the '83 Vmax and the '83 SRV. I know the Vmax used the Comet all the years it was produced. The SRV switched back to a Yamaha clutch somewhere in it's production run (maybe '86 ?) after Yamaha had further developed their own clutch.
The problem was, all 102C clutches are around 7 1/2 or 7 5/8 inches in diameter. The 108C clutches are 8 inches diameter. This increased diameter was not a great match for the stock secondary clutch, which was set up to work with the smaller 102C.
The 108C isn't horrible, I have one on my '83 Vmax, but it loses some efficiency at full shift because it can't get the drive belt squeezed to the top of the sheaves with the stock secondary.
Another oddball thing with these clutches on these particular Yamahas is a rather unusual offset of the drive clutch on the tapered crankshaft. A lot of "run of the mill" Comets, or Polaris drive clutches won't have the same offset.
But, it sounds like you have an original 102C off of an SRV. That will work great if , as you said, you put the Vmax ramps and spring in it.
75 Sno Jet Astro SS; 79 Kawasaki Invader 440 (two of them); 81 Scorpion Sidewinder; 82 Blizzard 9500; 83 Yamaha Vmax 540; 97 MXZ 670; and holding.....for now.
