I tore down a Kohler 340 twin yesterday out of a sled that had sat for years.
I noted that the sled was very oily under the hood and around the engine.
I found out why when I pulled the heads.
Suprise Suprise, no head gaskets.
Also found one bad needle cage bearing and broke 3 out of 4 rings taking them apart.
I always say it is best to take and engine completely apart and here was another example why.
The crankcase was full of ND topsoil also which may have lead to the cage bearing failure.

Re: Another suprise found
Wade I think this one will live again.
I got the crank soaking in a bucket of solvent right now.
Parts on order, life is good. Thanks for the offer.

Todd I'm learning that your 100% right, after 31+ years of some of these motor lives and several owners of them you truly are gambling by not taking them apart to investigate!

I'm still learning.
This afternoon I pulled a clutch off that I have never seen before.
I have no clue what it is but it has 5/8" fine threads.
I did not have a puller for it so I had to buy a NSF bolt.
This is on a 1971 Starcraft Escort.
My next project sled is a 1968 Yukon King Grizzly which will be another first.
