cdi with point type magneto coils

Post by lwb140 »

k , so I know we have kicked this ball around before, but... ive got 2 midmount sleds that I have converted to cdi. both sleds have the old style coils still on them. I have had no problems so far and both sleds run as they should. has anyone else done this and has it worked ok? I really like the stock appearance of the coils on the fan tower . just wandering how long this will last . I know the cdi conversion kits came with new coils back in the day . was this just because they were made by different manufactures and this was for warranty purposes? don't want to end up on the rope of shame at the bogie boogie. wade

As long as the two different coils have similar specs I see no problem.

the dc resistance of the 2 are different on the primary side and secondary both , but if the cdi doesn't mind running them I think they should work ? right ? thanks

got it straight from the horses mouth , scott at hewtech says it will work for awhile but coils will fail sooner than later. the point type coils are made with finer wire and will heat up and fail over time !! thanks wade

I would think that is true as the numbers are not close at all.

I know the CAT Racers used to use special red coils for hotter spark but they were short lived.
But they would produce some crazy spark for a while.
