75 300 darting

Post by cwarren »

My friend has a 300 that we just got back on the trail. We took it for about a 60 mi ride last weekend and he could barely hang onto it. The rear end wants to come around on it and it feels like it wont stay hooked up. Being a bogey suspension, is there a way to change the track pressure to give it a little less ski pressure. I've never had this problem with any of my bogey sleds. He claims that it didn't have this condition last year. Looking under the tunnel, everything appears to be in one piece and in working order. Thanks for any ideas.

My first thought is to check the ski aliment and check and spindle bushings, also have a really good look at the tie rods and tie rod ends.

my 2 cents

Just out of curiosity, do the skis have carbides? Longer carbides can cause this issue when the track is not studded.

Skis are aligned and look good. There is just steel wear bars on it, no carbides. It feels like the rear end is super loose at any speed. I'm stumped.

Maybe it's a High Output 300??

Have your friend carry a passenger. That will change the weight and make it hookup better.

There is no way to adjust ski pressure with boggies.

One thing you could try is running ski skins. They helped a lot with darting on a few of my sleds. If you can't find ones for Deere, skins for early 90 Cat are pretty close. You just have to change the bolt holes some and bend the nose up a bit to secure it to the ski.

Oh she's a ripper for sure!!!! Maybe we'll throw 144 pics in it to get all that freshly rebuilt power to the ground and keep her hooked! :lol22: It just has me stumped because it didn't do this last year. Not a biggie. He'll just have to deal with it.

That would fall into the catagory of wretched excess.

Try starting with 36.

if I remember correctly the 300s have less bogies in the front I believe. I think they have one less axle or something , this would make the wheels that are there more important , double check to make sure the axles are free and move well. this would effect ski pressure compared to the big bad 400s and x's wade

Is your track tension correct? I had a similar issue with my 800 this year, but was acting probably different then what you're experiencing. It didn't want to hookup, but it was because my track was too tight, so the sprockets would spin over the lugs on the track. Felt like slipping. When I did get the correct tension, it would get squirrly (back end would kick out) in a couple of places on the trail when the snow depth was low. Too much power on a solid rubber track trying to hold a compacted trail. Maybe I need to add picks too!
