Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
Really hoping with 150 psi that the mice haven't ruined this motor! Also the discoloration on the mag piston has me nervous! The Pistons look decent from the exhaust holes but won't know for sure until she is torn apart....I'm guessing some yahoo ran her without airbox and oil injection unhooked but I pray they had 50:1 sense at least

Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
I see your point Allan.
Looks like some alumunim transfer happening in there.
Maybe it simply overheated.
Those mice sure so mess up the works don't they.
What are you doing with that No. 1 Phillips Driver?
How long did it take your wife to allow you to do engines in her kitchen?
I do that too. The island has great lighting, fridge is arms length away and I can watch MSNBC at the same time.

Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
Todd, First of all I like how observant you are with pictures lol
I am praying for just some simple overheating and that she is salvageable as I have no sportfire parts lying around lol just liquifire parts.
I hate mice!!!
I used a #2 in a socket wrench for the tough ones and a #1 just to ease them out quickly, Time is of the essense when you don't wanna get busted in the kitchen! But your right! always great lighting in there and the Grainbelt is very close by!

Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
So I am sitting at work, not thinking about work and was thinking.....would my extra stock ART pistons and rings from my liquifires work in my sportfire cylinders if need be???

Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
It appears that the specs are almost identical, and as long as the LF ring end gaps are within sportfire specs they should work, feel free to chime in please

Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
Glad to see that I am not the only one to think about sleds while at work! Hope you can get it to work. My 82 sportfire is a blast to ride. Change the fan bearings before remounting, it will save a lot of work later. Later Lincoln

Note the difference in rings.
There must have been a reason for it.

Lincoln, when you work with the mentally i'll.....a guy needs to day dream lol. Todd I looked and the sportfire pistons are completely different from the Liquifire pistons. Got some disheartening news while pulling her apart last night, The pto cylinder is starting to flake some chrome and the mag piston is toast, scuffed and scored. Realisitically it could use two new cylinders...heads look usuable. I haven't had time to look at the crank yet, but if that think is toast too, well then I have an anchor. The crappy part is I have no sporty parts.

Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
As much as I guy would like you can't save them all.
An donor engine will turn up and life will be smiles again.
In the mean time you can go throuh the rest of the sled and have it all cherried out awaiting a transplant mill.

Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
Alan send me the crank if it is bad, I will take it to my guy. He has done several cranks for Kawi motors for me, and he can build them from end to end. We even discussed billet rods at one point for mine. Millenium does a fabulous job on the jugs, and use new wisecos and the motor will be done for years. Don't give up on it, if nothing else, sell it to me I will do all the work for a spare motor. IT CAN BE SAVED!!!!!! Later Lincoln

Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
Well here's the update, The jugs were cleaned up by the local machinest shop and are ready to go, The crank however is past usuable. I have a donor crank coming shortly. I will also be getting two new pistons for her. Everything else on her seems in good shape but wont know until I work on her throughout the summer, but will hopefully have her ready for waconia! Lincoln you'll be first in line for this beat up crank if I decide to send her packing!

Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
What is wrong with the crank? Where did you find a replacement so fast? Great to hear you will get it running again. Since you are working on it. I would replace all the bearings on it as well. Mine is a great time to ride, I am going to change the gearing for next year though, an old man owned it for ice fishing, at 7200 rps it is fully shifting, but only goes about 55 to 60 mph. I think it should do better then that. Just another thing to do before next winter. Probably give it a fresh coat of paint as well. Later Lincoln

Re: 1982 Sportfire snuck onto the Trailer
The inner bearings are a lil rusty and wobbley. Luckily a member on here had a crank available. Yeah that thing should go faster, my Trailfire 340 goes 60mph with 17/35 gearing!
