How do you...

Post by afponiky »

I've taken off the speedo angle unit three times and I still can't seem to get it set right to run the cable.

No, the cable is not broken either.

I'm getting flustered.

It is a pain in the arse to keep taking off the cover, which of course releases the bearing on the drive shaft and it's a pain to get it back together.

Anyone have any tricks of the trade for this?

With the cable installed on the lower drive, remove the cable at the speedometer and turn the inner square drive as you are lining up the lower angle drive.

That I have done, it seems like when I try to get the angle bracket on it doesn't line up.

I'm fighting the drive pulley moving away from the hole so it is very difficult to get this aligned.

As soon as the 3 bolts come out the drive shaft pulls because of the track. I don't have the tracked fully hooked up yet so it isn't real hard but what a pain in the arse.

I just assembled mine last week Gary, I'm not sure why you are having problems.

Taking off the angle drive shouldn't release the bearing and axle...unless you are putting the three bolts in from the outside? Put the bolts through the flanges and spacer from the inside of the tunnel, pointing out. Place the drive key in the bushing in the axle, remove cable from angle drive so you can handle it easier, slide it onto the drive key, then rotate it to line up with the three bolts. Hopefully, you can wiggle it on without pushing the bolts out. They don't just go "clunk" and fall on, you have wiggle it around a bit until you can get the nuts started.

Once it is together, you shouldn't be able to turn the guts of the drive, it is after all connected to the driveshaft now. If you can turn it, something is stripped, the angle drive or the bushing in the axle.

Reconnect the speedo cable to the drive, and you are good to go! It's fun isn't it?

Anyway, that's how I've done it.

you should also note that there is a pliips srew that can be removed and the angle drive comes off housing without removing three boolts... this is the Normal way to replace the insert

Jacilynn, again you came up with the best info!

I am so thankful to you!

I'll try that this morning after I go and get my new glasses so I can see WTF I'm doing.

Thanks, Gary
