I found a deal on a 76 300. I dont know much about the older green machines. Is there anything to watch out for? Is this a good model? any info is appreciated.

**EDIT** bought it last night for a 20 spot...seat is shot, cover that goes over the engine is missing and th eengine is stuck but the rest of th esled appears straight and decent...good skis, track, etc.

Typical story, guy said it ran 3 years ago when he parked, then he went to start it this year and its stuck solid...just wanted it out of his way.

I have a 76 300 that my grandfather bought new. I rode the machine as a kid and my wife rides it now. I think the model is solid, I haven't had major problems with any 00" series sleds. Carbs (may need to be rebuilt if machine has sat for a while) will be a common problem. Track, bogies, skis and tunnel condition will all depend on if the machine was looked after. The only thing may be that it depends on your size (I am 6'2", 240 lbs) and the 300 is a little under powered for me. But like I said it is perfect for my wife. Check out Aprils' DOTM those are my 00" series sleds. Hope this helps?

We have the one my father -in-law bought new in 72'? Great small machine,a little tippy perhaps ,as most old boogie machines were , they do go fast enough to get hurt on, but are a good kids machine. I'm not a big fan of the wally carbs ,and we've changed ours to a Mikuni.
Good luck, have fun, Bill

I've got a 74 300 which I learned some of the common lessons the hard way.. Change the crank seals on both sides.. That lesson cost me the engine.. Outside of that, talk nice to it as it and it should respond in turn..

Other lessons to learn...

Don't tell your wife when you have bought more parts from e bay..

When you want to go up to the cottage for a ride don't tell your wife that your going for a ride...Tell her you need to check the heavy snow on the roof or you heard that there where reports of breakins and you need to check the doors and windows.

Many members on this board have a wealth of information for you , and all you need to do is ask.

Several board members seem to hoard hard to find items in their basements and garages. I swear Brian400 has a warehouse. Post what you need in the classified section.. I've had great results in the past when all other sources have dried up..

Cheers

Id like to back up Brians story I dont think his warehouse of parts is very big and doubt he would hoard anything he could help someone with. Id say Brian is 1 one of the best people on here as far as trying to help troubleshot things etc but doubt hes got a big stash of parts just some good knowledge.

PS he does live very far from me and Ive never seen his stuff HAHA

The wife is not oblivious to the sled thing, and she knows boxes show up with things bought off ebay, I just don't brag about how many $$ might have been spent.

This HOF thing has queered the deal a bit. I sent two snowmobile suits out for dry cleaning today, and a new pair of Sorel boots have arrived. She knows insurance has been put back on the truck. The biggest problem is the fact that she has to help pick up the slack while I am gone. I've mentioned to her, that while I know her natural urge when she sees me enjoying myself is to: "put a stop to that", that she could cut me some slack and let me do this. Oh yeah, a new stove top has been ordered I think.

If Jon keeps amping this thing up, MY GOSH! By the day before, like the kids in the Disney commercial, I'll be screaming: " I'M TOO EXCITED TO SLEEP"!

Oh yeah Paul, when you get here she'll be at work, I'm not totally stupid

Rich,

I think you mentioned your 3rd anniversary back on the first of the month?

Honeymooners! She no doubt still cares

I'm working on 27.

:o

Oh, and we know who to blame for this whole sickness, don't try to throw it back on us, we only had a mild fever until you and Jon stoked the fire.

Hi jeremy,

I like my 300. It's fun to mess around on and it's great for road-running. You saw my 300 when you picked up the Spitfire. They are kind of comfortable and pretty simple from what I've seen so far. Also built solid.

The 300 probably isn't a Penelope Cruz sort of snowcat, more a Helen Hunt type of deere-well mannered, pretty without being threatening and very accessible. Frankly, I think the 00 series will be what I collect if I purchase anything more than the 300 and JDX-8 I already own.

Hope you like the Spitfire. It was just too much like riding Penelope Cruz for my liking. Helen Hunt is more my style.

Oh yeah, if you need the engine rebuilt call Northern Crankshaft in Thief River Falls. They do a lot of snowmobile engine work.
