Several more excellent points mentioned above. If you aren't aware of this resource, go to http://www.vintagesnow.com/John_Deere.html
There are service, parts, owners manuals on line to utilize. I didn't see an '83 Trailfire service manual listed, but they do have one for the '82.
Hope your not thinking...."Sheesh, what have I gotten myself into?"
If you take care of checking all of the major things out now, you can then go for a few years by just double checking some basic things....I use "Sea Foam" fuel stabilizer in all my sleds. There are other good ones out there. I usually put 1 oz. per gallon of fuel during the riding season, then bump it up to 2 oz. just before putting the sleds away in the spring. But, I still pop the carbs off in the fall, just to make sure they are very clean and ready to go, and doing a few other basic checks.
Good luck!

Thanks for the link, that will help a lot! I have already wondered what I've gotten myself into, but I really dig vintage stuff. I have 3 old Ford trucks that I tinker around with, and I just sold my 83 Honda CB650 bike, still kicking myself for that one. Also have a few vintage lawn mowers and have restored a vintage tractor. So it was an easy pit to fall into.
