First Sportfire built

Post by fast823 »

Picked up the first Sportfire built this weekend. I think some of you were alerted to this as the guy I bought it from had some other offers but for once I was first in line. Will probably be the only JD sled I will not drive.

Thanks everybody. I plan on a full resto and then I will just look at it. I was born in in 1980 so think it is kind of neat to have it. I am still amazed I got it since I usually am second in line on these types of things. Motor is free and tunnel straight. Haven't had time to look it over much since I got it home. I just unloaded in the shop and parked it next to another 80 sportfire.

Sweet , Nice find. I have looked at hundreds of Deeres over the years and never think to look at serial # for first one built or last one built . Its really becoming a big deal though . Congrats . Brock

Thats pretty dang cool, I'm with Brock on this, As of recent have I really thought to look at serial #s....Always fun to think about which of the "cool" serial #s are known/unknown and if they're around or have been destroyed.

Not sure what your name is but that is a great find! This topic has come up a number of times over the years.
There is a 1984 Snowfire in my collection serial number 0001 and until now it was the only known serial no 1 Deere snowmobile
alive. Being the first one ever made makes it extremely appealing! Is he the original owner? If not I can tell you who it is .........
Cheers

Thanks Joe. I updated my profile with my name.

I believe I am the third or forth owner and when I get home I will see whose name on the reg card. The guy I bought it from bought it from a neighbor in a package deal.

So with yours this is only the second #001 known?

I believe that is correct Trevor. Only yours is way more impressive!
A sled like that deserves to have the complete history if it can be done.
Wow ...... what a fitting and cool last name!

Instead of restoring it, treat it to a cosmetic restoration preserving its history. Similar to what Joe has done to the last Liquifire.

I should have wrote down what the guy said I bought it from but I thought it came from a Deere dealer near Horicon? I will see if there are any dealer stickers on it. Hopefully this weekend I will have time to look it over a little.

I am open to about anything. What defines a cosmetic restoration?
