Transportation
I have a JDX8 I need to move from Syracuse, NY to either Dallas, TX (where I live) or St. Peter, MN (where all the sleds are kept). I thought about renting a U haul or Budget truck for a one-way move but that would cost 3 times the value of the sled. I could drive but a round trip TX to NY is about 44 hrs.
Any ideas on how to move the sled economically?

Try Uship to see what kind of bids you get.

JDJR makes that run from NY to TX several times a year.

Re: Transportation
Hello David,
I live in Fort Worth and have a house in NY. I have a 4030 that needs to find its way to TX, along with about 3 more sleds. Athough I will be in Rochester, NY next weekend, we are flying up this trip. If you not in a hurry, I might be able to help you out next spring or summer. My next trip depends on how soon the NY house sells and I also have a July 4th wedding that I plan to drive up for at this time.
Thanks,
-Joe Rainville

Re: Transportation
My parents live there. When I first sign up I was at home. Esko. Guess I can update that. I thought someone would think it was a joke if I listed Texas as a home address. Then I found out there is another member here in the Dallas/Ft Worth area. There is a good chance Texas will get some snow again this year. It only lasts a day or two. If I get the JDX8 down here, I love to bring it to the TX/OK border and get a picture with the sled in front to the "Welcome to Texas" sign!TASKY wrote:usafrpilot wrote: Dallas, TX (where I live) or St. Peter, MN (where all the sleds are kept).

Re: Transportation
I promised a report.
I ended up using U-ship after all because my buddy's trucker was tied up with a high value load. I read the U-ship reviews and it did not give me a lot of confidence. I am suspicious of opinions on the internet for and against. U-ship is a broker and hosts the bids. They charge you an administrative fee and they take a cut from the truckers fee.
I moved a '75 JDX8 from Syracuse, NY to Ft. Worth, TX. I posted a bid for $500. It was accepted by one mover in less than a day. I needed time to coordinate the pick up before I processed the bid. By the time I got that done (about 24 hrs) the mover told me he had already left the area and the bid expired.
A second mover accepted the bid. I coordinated the pick up. Struck a deal. I specified a pick up date and the mover (Hot Shot Truck) emailed me and said he was a day behind. I had to adjust the pickup time with the seller. Fortunately, he was available the following day. The mover arrived late in the afternoon, close to the specified cut off time. Fortunately, he had a car trailer and it was loaded in minutes. I could track his position via GPS and watched him S-turn all over the country enroute to Ft. Worth. He was scheduled to arrive the day before Thanksgiving. I could tell by watching his progress he was not going to make it by then. I had his cell and called him. He offered to deliver on Thanksgiving day. I declined. Wife would not be amused.
We agreed on the day after. He was somewhere in Arkansas. Based on previous performance I did not have any expectation of and on time arrival but sure enough at 9am he was there. Pushed the sled out, gave him his redemption code and he was gone.
So in the end it worked. I had to be a little flexible. I paid less for the transportation that it would have cost me to do it any way I could see.
I have his name and would use him again. I would most likely go direct. Not confident U-ship would do much to resolve issues. That is based only on the reviews I read. Therefore, the risk is you don't know who your getting and they have your property and you have very little leverage. Best you could do is withhold payment via the redemption code you are given but they have your property.
This guys runs all over the country. I suspect he wouldn't bid on a load on the west coast when he is on the east cost but when he is in the correct geographic position it should work alright. Nice guy. Communicated well. Fair price. He is on the road 3 out of 4 weeks. Via GPS I could tell he works long hours.
Hope you guys find this useful.

Re: Transportation
I used uship twice, first time was a ex-military serviceman and his dad running two trucks and was a no problem and good communication transfer. The other was two derelicts that picked up a sled here for a guy I sold it to that were late and had a truck and trailer that looked like it wasn't going to make it out of town. I think the key is to read the reviews and make the best educated decision not just the lowest price. Being a owner operator of a semi truck I can only imagine what these hot shot truckers deal with, it's not always easy to find, load and estimate travel times for their loads. Communication is key though if there are problems. Just my $.02
