'79 Trailfire No Spark

Post by mrregular »

Hey guys, I was hoping someone could help shed some light on my no spark problem. I had my sled running great for about half an hour with no problems, the when I shut it down it would not start again. I am not getting any spark at all. I changed the ignition coil to no avail and checked the wiring which seems fine. Am thinking its the cdi but not sure. Any ideas?

This may sound like a stupid question to some, but do you have to remove the stator plate and coils to do an ohms test on the coils or can test them by the two wire leads going to the cdi?

You can leave it in the motor. Go back to the 295s link and click on the hewtech link there and see if that works.

Thanks Jimmy, I got the hewtech link to work through the 295s page. I am going to do an ohms test tomorow and hope to figure something out. let you know how it goes.

Hold on, before you do that, the 295/s had a completely different ignition then your Trailfire, so the readings don't work.

Here's another post with numbers from a Liquifire, which should be the same: http://www.jdsleds.com/community/viewto ... f=6&t=7303

Thanks Matt for the info, but do you have to remove the engine and flywheel to do the tests or can it be done by checking the exposed wire leads? Also do you know how to remove a stuck clutch from the motor without damaging it?

No, you take the measurements from the leads outside the engine.

Do you have a clutch puller? If so, fill the clutch hole with grease before you put the puller in. This puts hydraulic pressure on it.

Thanks for the help Matt, I did a continuity test the other day on the wires for the pulsar and exciter coils and found that they are grounded is this a sign that they are shorted?

What are you using to test?

You are not checking continuity here. You are checking resistance.

You need a DVM or OHM meter. A continuity tester will show fail(short) on every coil.
