Green Liquifire?

Post by oldsledguygtx »

Just picked up a 1978 Liquifire. The black paint is wearing off the hood and is showing green under it.I thought the 1978 LF was the only deere sled to use the hood with the single vent on the right so why the green underneath. The vent is proper and not added after.Did deere paint some replacement hoods green.I think this is the original hood buy cant be sure.

The fiberglass gel coat on my '78 hood is green.
1977 340 Liquifire, 2 - 1978 440 Liquifires, 78 cc Clone(#35),
1997 Polaris XCR SE 600 (mistake).....
#400v

I seemed to have been a much better driver when my sled was slower.

The serial number is J44LG 082358 M most of my 1st gen liquifires have a SMC hood not fibreglass. This one appears to be fibreglass.Something else I noticed is they seem to be paint not gel coat or they have a very very thin gelcoat,

I'm going to go out on limb (and I'm sure someone will cut it off LOL) and say that it has something to do with the time your sled was built. 82358 is the highest serial number I've seen for a 78. Since they were going to no longer build that style they may have used any part they could find including an old unused hood. Just a guess.

Are the 1978 hoods all fiberglass and not SMC? Maybe since Deere knew this was a one year only sled it was easier and cheaper to make them in fiberglass than SMC. Seems funny they would go back to the old technology and not make them from SMC. Still doesn't explain the green underneath.

Looks to be about the same green as the 78 Cyclone's. The grill location is good for a fan cooled inlet also, maybe they had thoughts of using that basic hood for both models? Most likely only someone in the model planning at Deere at the time would know.
