Muffler Dilemma

Post by 70WT1 »

So I think I mixed up the muffler or the rear bracket for my Trailfire, I know the manifold is correct, the part number is visible. Soooooo is there any way to ID the muffler or bracket by themselves? I think I have all Liquifire stuff, do all the Liquifire mufflers have a flat round spot or an L welded into the top of them near the end by the chain case? The 3 I have do.
I've searched for a bunch of pics online without any real help. Even the pics from my tear down is not real clear. Who thought I would of needed a good picture of the muffler :bonk:

I tossed a bunch of mufflers and other junk, and my 84 Trailfire muffler may have been in the mix :bonk: :bonk:

Yes, the L is the Liquifire muffler.

So the muffler I have is not a Liquifire and I know the manifold is correct, so it might be the bracket. If I mixed up the muffler it would've had to be from an 80 Sportfire that's the only other sled I junked. I'm not sure if it would fit correctly though??

My problem is the rear of the muffler wont line up with the bracket, it's correct at the manifold and the first mount in the bulkhead, but its too close to the chain case , or the bracket is longer than needs be. Or the 82-84 sled is wider than the 80-81's

70WT1,

The Trailfire and Sportfire mufflers are the same, and are interchangeable. As the guys said, the 80-84 Liquifire muffler looks the same, but with the "L" welded on it opposite from the outlet pipe. I don't remember if the rear brackets are unique between the Trail/Sport and Liquifire, but I do think they are directional.

I hope this helps,

I just checked and the brackets have the same part number for both a Trailfire and Sportfire.

Would you be able to post some pics?

I got it figured out, the bracket really only fits one way with the upper part mounting over the chain case stud, I found one of the spot welds in the bracket was broke so it had spread apart wider than it needed. So just like the old saying get a bigger hammer :bonk:

I replaced the bracket and fits perfect now.
