CDI Tester

Post by Jimmy »

Hey Joe, or anyone else who can help me. I'm trying to diagnose the problem with my 81 Liquifire. Runs darn good for the first 4 miles till everything gets warmed up then won't rap over 6500 RPM. So I let that set and drove my 83 Liquifire, after about 20 miles I lost power on the low end so it would hardly pull itself. Had to baby it till I got so RPM's built up then it would run like it should, but you definetly did'nt want to slow down to much. So I have two sleds with electrical problems, well actually three, my 295s is giving me fits also. I have the JDM-74 Tester with everything that goes with it but I'm missing one thing and thats the "load coil". In test #2 your supposed to use the load coil to check the CDI output. Without it I can't do the rest of the tests. So what is a load coil? What does it do? Can I use something else in its place? Or does anyone have one they want to sell? If not sell maybe if it can see whats on the inside and make one. Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys. jimmy

Jimmy,
We have had our share of electrical issues with the second gen Liquifire's. Do not have or have I ever used one the JD Testers. This has worked for us...Rule one: throw away the rev limiter. Two: Swap out CDI box with a known working one. Not quite so easy between the early and later gen 2 LF's like you have. Three: Ohm stator (readings on jdsleds someplace) with regular ohm meter. Off mfg. readings? Then replace with a NOS or a new rewound. Use NOS or rewound cause it is a pain in the butt job to do over again. Then to add insult to injury, sometimes they ohm good and still don't work! Though I have never had that happen to us.

Go to Hewtech website and read about troubleshooting ignitions on sleds.

I am looking forward to read what is posted about the "load coil" test.

Good Luck,

keith

On the 81 try a new ignition coil, those wear out easily and overheat and produce minimal spark when they are wore out. Happened on mine, new ignition coil cured it. On the 83 the cdi/ignition coil are together so that hole assembly would need repair or replacement if bad
