Help with cylinder id

Post by 78LF »

I have some cylinders that have no casting numbers on them.
image.jpg
They came in open boxes that have a label on them.

How can I be sure they are as labelled on the box?

If they are original boxes, the cylinders are for 340S.

They look like 340/s and are in 340/s labelled boxes, but how do I confirm they actually are 340/s? Shouldn't there be some casting numbers or some kind of marks on them? I also have another set of cylinders that look similar, but with a bigger bore.

This set has casting numbers, does anyone know what they are for?

The bigger bore cylinders are for a 440/5 motor would be my guess. The motor was used in the 74 500 and 600. I am interested in those if you are selling them.

I dont know if this helps or confuses the issue but the 340/s cylinders I just looked at had no casting numbers in that area. They had a small 3 digit stamp on the bottom of the bottom cooling fin under the right beneath the exhaust stud. I will have to dig up others to confirm a pattern.

With the second set of cylinders, I was wondering if they were for the 440/5 motor, but I don't have anything to compare casting numbers. I do have a 340/5, these cylinders look like them externally, but I hate to disassemble this motor to find the casting numbers. Does any one have a record of casting numbers? Cabin dweller, I'll keep you in mind if I decide to sell the second set of cylinders.

I would also be interested if you decide to sell them. But I also hope you find a use for them like on your own sled. Thanks for sharing your find and I hope you find what you need. Later Lincoln

I am certain the casting numbers on the big bores are for the 440/5. I have a 340/5 motor tore down but it is stashed away at the moment. I know there is a casting number on those jugs similar to the number that is on the 440/5 jugs you have. Might be something like 5050000, just guessing.

I agree with Tasky. The 340/s and 295/s cylinders had no casting numbers in them. I had a set of 295/s cylinders from my sled and the previous owner traded them out for 340/s cylinders. So he could cheat and run in the 300 cc class. Brock Weber and I looked over the 295/s cylinders very well. Only way to tell is to measure the bore. Hope this helps. Jdrob.

The no casting numbered cylinders have a 2.365 marked on them I believe that is the bore of the cylinders in inches. Converted to millimeters it equals 60 mm The bore size of a 340/s 2.365inches = 60.01 mm.

The bigger cylinders are marked with what I believe to be 2.675. I looked up the bore on the 440/5 motor and came up with 68 millimeters. I converted 68 millimeters to inches and came up with 2.677 inches.

I don't know what casting numbers or absence of them the 340 piston port motor cylinders have on the JD 400 but given that they came out of a 340rs/2 box and the bore matches I want to believe they are for the 340/s. I know the 440/5 motor had casting numbers just like in your picture I dont remember what the sequence is.

I would speculate that you have 340/s cylinders and 440/5 cylinders.

Thanks guys, I suspected that they were 340/s and 440/5 cylinders, but I wanted to be sure. If the 295/s and 340/s cylinders do not have casting numbers, what about the heads?
