You can purchase it from http://vintagesledpaint.com. Go to Paint, then John Deere.

Re: 1975 JD 300
Was there a difference in silencers back in 1975 for the 300 series models, I got a parts sled and I was cleaning it up and noticed the exhaust tip is a lot shorter ( roughly 4 inches In length ) and on the silencer it says "silent and power tuned" is there a difference between this one and the one I currently have on my sled where the tip is quite longer (12 inches or more)

Re: 1975 JD 300
Hello Garrett,
The Model 300 is Kohler powered, and uses a unique exchaust system that is slightly different than the other Donaldson "Power Tuned" mufflers used on other 100 series sleds. I "don't think" that Deere changed the 300 muffler from 74-77, but I admittedly will have to look it up to verify.
Good luck with your sled restoration!

Yes it has a kohler K295-2AX motor in it. So if I installed the Donaldson "power tuned" silencer I'd be gaining nothing and possibly losing from this?
Is there anyway I get some more HP out of this little motor?
I got a mikuni carb installed already

Re: 1975 JD 300
I think the little Kohler was about 28 hp stock, but they run good for such a little motor. The only real update I could suggest would be to find a 340 or 400cc version of the -2AX motor for it's top end. Other than that, I would suggest finding a complete 1975 Model 800. It was about 46 hp stock and had that cool tuned pipe with bogies.
I hope this helps,
-Joe

There are always ways to get more power out of a engine. Porting the cylinder and the welding a calculated tuned pipe after the porting will get you a lot more power. But increasing power in your engine will give you more work.... the carb has to be tuned in to a higher air/fuel speed and the clutches might need new springs and weights.
Here you have a spec of Yamahas 292 engine. If you look at the last page, you can see different port areas (inlet/outlet times) and it's the same cylinder except the SR. The SR is a reed intake cylinder.
I can't find the file with the HP-spec for each type, but their are very different. Of course it's not only the better flow trough the cylinder that matters, the tuned pipe is just as important making horsepowers.
So if you can translate the port time to your cylinder and then take the time to grind the ports with a Dremel or take the cylinder to your dentist and let him port You could gain almost twice the power out of your engine.
Good luck. And if you go for it, let us know with many pictures
