Aren't horsepower numbers extremely variable anyway? Based on tuning, if the engine has been balanced & blueprinted, etc. Which lead to the "red dot" engines that had the best dyno numbers out of the crate, so they went to the race team.

No two mass produced engines were completely alike, regardless how careful the producer may have been. It's my understanding the Red Seal motors were selected based on performance out of the crate as Matt suggested. The balancing / blueprinting work happened in the race shop, followed by further scrutiny and ultimate selection for race sled use. Rumor has it there are some RS motors around to this day, perhaps not making the ultimate cut years ago, but perfect for some lucky 295/S owner's resto project.
