1982 Liquifire no start/bog

Post by mr-spock »

Hi guys, I joined about a year ago but never posted anything. but anyway I got a 82 Liquifire 4 years ago and and only got to ride her one day then couldn't get to start after that. Determined she was low on compression (80PSI) So i tore her apart an thought Ill just get over sized pistons and have the cylinders bored. Im new to snowmobiles and didn't know about the chrome cylinders. (I had already bought .030 over pistons) well... Shes been sitting tore apart in the garage for the past 3 years, it was a sad sight :( so last winter I started working on it, split the crankcase an put seals in, found some good used cylinders. Just recently got it all back together an Im having some problems getting it to start. Its just a real bogger below 3000 RPMs to the point that its very hard to start i did get it going once or twice and it runs strong above 3000. This Liquifire needs your help guys!

Thanks Jake

Jake, make sure you have spotlessly clean carbs and fresh gas. The next thing to check is the condition of the choke plungers and correct adjustment. Also, try unhooking the rev limiter. There are many posts on the fireseries liquifire starting issues.

Yes, I drained the gas tank and put recreation fuel in it 50-1 mixed . cleaned carburetor s the best I know how. Do I need to remove any jet nasals? Chokes are definitely seating. Rev limiter was already disconnected. Also I have reason to suspect that this machine has 80-81 ignition? But don't know how to tell for sure.

Clean the carb again, taking everything apart.
If possible use a ultrasonic cleaner and then blow everything with compressed air.
When you have cleaned it, clean it one more time... :)

And of course, clean the fuel pump. Change bad membran

Tried it out after carbs were cleaned and it wasn't wanting to start but even worse than before. It would only cough a few times. And I determined it was only firing one one cylinder because only one exhausts got warm. Went to pull the spark plugs out to check them and the plug wire boot just fell off in my hand.. I cant really see how it can be reconnected. Looks like I have to buy a new coil?

80 - 81 ignition systems have a separate coil and cdi box, while the 82 - 84 have a combined rectangular unit with the plug wires attached.

NGK makes spark plug wire caps that screw onto the plug wire, cost about $3. Cut 1/4 inch off the plug end wire and screw on. There are other alternatives without the builtin 5K ohm radio/tv interference suppression of the NGK caps. Try Briggs & Stratton. You should not have to buy a new coil assembly if your coil is good, just replace the plug cap.

Okay thanks JdGuy I looked at the cap that fell off and i see a little screw inside so i may just be able to reconnect it. ahh crap I was afraid of it having 80-81 ignition yep its got a separate coil and cdi.. must be why its boggy. :(

I have built a couple liquifires with the 80/81 ignitions. If those carbs don't have good gaskets, new powerjet orings, and good needle and seats and pulled out super clean jets, and the bodies aren't clean, you'll have fuel delivery issues. I'm guessing she's running rich or fat. But yes make sure your external ignition coil is good, that is if you have the earlier ignition.

Reattached the plug cap, It took three pulls and some skilled throttle feathering, but hey that's better that a hundred pulls  After it took off it was running great
even Idled down to 2 grand and didn't get too boggy when I hit the throttle. and was pretty snappy after 3 grand, Id say its running pretty good but think it could be better. Or should I not expect too much more of it? How can I tell If I need new needles? Would you guys recommend a carb rebuild kit? BTW Im planning on taking the old Liquifire out on the trails this winter cant wait :letitsnow: :needsnow: :thinksnow: :winter: :sled: sick of sweating :x

There is an 82 update that says to crank the idle up to 3200 rpms on the 80/81 motors to help with low end bog. This is where mine are, I also installed the 22/39 gearing. Mine are pretty snappy. Deep cleaning and new parts in these powerjet carbs are always a good idea!

Update, after many frustrating days working on the liquifire, and rebuilding the top end again$$ , This time I put wiescos in after i had bad luck with cheap pistons gouging my cylinders. But anyway i got to ride the liquifire the first time in four years. I don't even want to think about how many hours ive put into this and given up on it more thhan once.
