Tach Help

Post by Jack Frost »

I have a 1978 cyclone 340 that I am restoring and just about done. The problem is that the tach sits at 5500 rpm with the sled running and goes up from there when you give it some throttle. This is a 8000 rpm tach with no deere logo on it. To further complicate things this is the second tach I have tried and they both do the same thing. Now to really mess things up I tried a 10000 rpm tach with the deere logo and a fuse and it works fine except it's the wrong one for 1978. Any help would be appreciated

well im not gonna pretend to know much about sled but in my opinion i would just go with what works for now and keep looking for hte right one better to have a incorrect tach that works then one thats completely off its rocker

Went through the whole wire harness today and every thing is hooked up properly but still have the same problem with the tach sitting at 5500 rpm. I even tried another tach to bring the total to four and still no luck. please help.

The 10,000 RPM tach is the correct one for 1978. JD part # AM53193, the same tach use on the 76-78 liquifires.

The speedo is origional and it doesn't have the deere logo. The sled did not have a tach when I purchased it but I put one on. So the 78 cyclone should have a 10000 rpm tach with no deere logo?

Dave.

The 76-78 cylone did not have a tach from the factory. The tach was a dealer /owner installed option. JD part # AM53193 tach does not have the deere logo.

Just spent the last 4 hours changing 22 track cleats on my original 78 cyclone with no tach.

:D Gotta pray for some more snow before I can get her out for the first ride of the year. Thanks for the info Harleysportster will put it to good use.

well this is gone on long enough...

1) a bad voltage regulator will throw off a tach badly..

2) jd and skidoo used simular tachs minus logo

3) most tachs have an adjustment hole at back for either 4,6,8 cylinders and/or an adjustment screw.
