JD 300 No Spark/Ground ?

Post by CornfieldsofIowa »

Greetings from a new member-

Hello all; I am having some trouble with a JD 300. It was gifted to me to utilize as a sled pulling machine with my children. It had sat inside for several years but overall is in descent shape. I have cleaned carb, cleaned fuel tank, new fuel lines, un-seized engine, etc..... Issue I am having is gaining spark. There are 2 black wires under the switch dash that are crimped together with a copper eyelet connector, however I am not sure where these secure to? There is no bolt or mount within reach of any direction of these wires, I have attached a jumper wire to this black wire connector and attempted to ground it throughout the sled and still no spark, yet if I hold the wire between my fingers while pulling cord I get a nice electrical current to plug wire. I assume this black wire is my problem? I read previous posts that mentioned grounding straps though I do not believe the 300 has a grounding strap? Any suggestions would be appreciated as my experience with snowmobiles is minimal. Thanks
Matt

Here's the wiring diagram, it may not be the exact one. All black is ground. Maybe you can look at a diagram and through process of elimination see where they are supposed to be.

More than likely the two black wires with the ring terminal are for grounding the optional gauges which were dealer installed.

Best test for spark is to unplug the main wiring harness at the engine and remove both spark plugs. Than hook up the plug wires and lay the plugs on top of the engine. Now pull the rope over.
If you have spark on one or both plugs than the problem is in the key switch, kill switch or wiring in that area under the dash.

If you have still no spark that you need to look at your points, coils, condensers and the stator. Also the external coils and the wireing for them.
The link Matt provided will help you. Also an OHM meter will be useful.
