I was at the auction, boy was it something to witness, I couldn't believe it. I was told that some museum from southern Wisconson bought them.

I think the price was ludicrous. I doubt there is a Deere sled collector on this page that values a 388 mile Model 600 that much. Seems that those sleds sold for about an order of magnitude over market value.

So if common sleds on a nice trailer brought way more than what they should have, what did the owner get for his money? In my take, he bought a story. A story about a pair of everyday sleds that hadn't seen the light of day in 42 years, had full documentation, gear, clothing, etc.

Sure, it helped that they were covered and un-weather, but I do not see how this is good for the hobby in any way. To quote another follow collector: "that's Dator in the crate money!"

I'm not a huge auction goer, but my dad is. He has told me stories about cars, pickups, farm tractors, etc., that are fairly common, or not really desirable go for big money. If the item is in exceptional shape, but otherwise does not fetch money on say, Craigslist, it may at an auction. All it takes is two or three crazy guys that want the same thing... could be similar to a gambling addiction. I agree with JR that they were buying the story behind it. In another selling medium, I doubt they would ever reach that price.
