spark plugs are different colors
I just put different heads on my 1972 jd 500 and pulled the plugs after I ran it about 15 minites. PTO side is brown and the other one is white. Can anybody tell me what is causing this. I just got the sled motor back from a guy who said he went through it and found everything to be ok but had to replace the heads because he over tightened sparkplugs. when i replaced the head on the fan side there were burn pits in the piston but they didnt look to bad so i put it back together. Should i do a total rebuild on this engine or do you guys think it just something simple. I am running BR8ES plugs

You have a prolem that needs to addressed before you run it anymore.
According to the Service Manual, on the early CCWs, you'll have to pull the bottom of the case off to replace the seals, as they are set in grooves in the case, with retaining rings to the outside. So you might as well replace both sides while you have it apart.
