Dont you hate when its so cold and no snow? You are lucky atleast you had some riding this winter. Here it is almost Feb and still no snow here. This is even worse than last winter.

The 1 neighbor whos a nitwit has a 78 or so panther. He was riding it around on the dirt road even though condtions sucked couldnt help but resent him since he was atleast riding.

The tank is in with a new filter.
Didnt have time to get fuel in her. Tomorrow hopefully.
I lost the bracket that holds part of the clutch cover somewhere under the exhaust, I didnt see it. Dummy!! I will have to look at this more tomorrow.
We shall see.

Andy.......sending the carb??
As for the sled and the running of it........today she ran sweet sitting idling and reving up to point of clutch engagement. Fuel filter is clean and fuel looks good. No snow.
Possible snow on its way.

Paul,
I hope you are getting this thing licked! I had thought about suggesting that maybe your center seals were shot on about page three, but fortunately you seem to have found your problem.
My dad has a JD X6 that had the same problem. The solution that I came up with was to get a tank from a 75 X-series sled and bolt it in. The only major difference was that for refueling dad now has to open the hood, and the refueling door on his sled will not set completely down. One (or both) of the ribs on the door hits the top of the plastic tank. I believe you could remove some of the rib (about a quarter inch thick sliver) on the door to get it to settle down completely if it bothered you (I left my dads sled alone). After that my dads X6 ran well until ignition problems developed the next season.
I have used a variation of Brians gravel/EZ off method with success too. I used gravel and automatic dishwasher detergent. I think the keys to that method are really hot water, an alkaline acid, sharp gravel, and a lot of grim determination. I shook that friggin tank as hard as I could for about twenty minutes. I'll tell you, it's tiring! After your acid bath, did you do a pressure test on the tank to make sure there were no pinholes?
Give your aching brain and heart a well deserved rest while waiting on the carb, but keep us posted here on the developments!
See you in Eagle River!
Kenny

Andy-
I got the carb today. Thanks again. You will get it back for sure.
I just wanted everyone to know how thankful I am for your advice and concerns. New guys that are on this sight, Andy sent me this carb from Pennsylvania to Illinois, just to try. That my friends is trust and pure love of our hobby which is second to none.
As for the sled, I am about 97% sure I have it licked. Wont really know anything for sure till I can either get some ride time on it and till I get some snow. I may even run her on the frozen ground.......who knows. The neighbors already think I am nuts for working on this thing when the thermometer reads 7 above zero with a windchill of -10.
I am considering my problems to all be from #1 a carb problem and #2 unseen rust in the fuel filter due to rust in the tank. I bought 5 filters, one on the sled and 4 more to take to the HOF, someone other than me just may need one.
The tank is spotless. It was not pressure checked, its in good shape. Just from sitting since 1982 really took a beating. The acid and pressure washing made her brandnew looking inside. I will see you at the HOF...........guaranteed!!

I just wanted to be able to quite replying to this post HAHA all kiddin aside thanks for the kind words I try my best. Most people into this hobby probably know that most people in it are nice and helpful. Just trying to do a good deed for all that have been done for me.
Hopefully you have it licked but feel free to take the carb to the HOF ride thats as close as I will get to being there and hopefully you wont need it but you can never have enough spare parts. When I used to mud bog foour wheel alot many people couldnt beleive the ools and parts I took along but they were usally the 1s borrowing tools.
