Have a 74 JD 400 - while cleaning the carb I found on the air box what looked to be part of a filter to keep larger debris out of the intake - looking in the manual there is some sort of filter there from the factory .
Is there anything available aftermarket that I can use for this filter?

Re: JD 400 Airbox Filter
I've seen guys take a piece of foam filter, similar to what you see clamped on the side of a lawn mower to cover the opening on the air box. Similar material, not exactly a lawn mower air filter cause it wouldn't be big enough.
I've generally seen it folded in half and clamped on. This material needs to be fairly porous to allow free flow of air, just catch the big stuff (don't want to restrict air to the carb). Mine had the remains of one on from original, but basically turned to dust when I pulled it off.

Re: JD 400 Airbox Filter
I recently made a new filter for it using lawn mower air filter foam. I bought the block at Lowes and cut it in half with a razor blade. Trim the two semi-circles to be one full circle. It fit well between the two metal screens.
