I've also seen small pieces of old drive belts cut and placed under the springs...

Mine had some cracks in them, so after I removed and cleaned them, I filled in every crack or tear with liquid rubber. Either a Flex Seal material or Plati-dip would work. It turned out pretty good, and they haven't gotten worse.
