Any one tune with egt's? I was thinking about giving it a try and wanted some thoughts?

I have 2 sleds with Koso egt . It's not as easy to tune with them as it seems it should be , they are great for avoiding disasters

Re: Tuning by EGT
So Wade, what temps do you look for (or avoid) with EGT's? Those readings would be much higher than a CHT gauge I assume.
To make things a little more confusing for me, I was reading some technical info at NGK website, and the plug tip temperatures were much hotter than I expected for a fouling condition, running clean, or overheating. Then again, that's the tip of the plug, which would be different than what your cylinder head temperature would be. I'm still sticking to the 550 Deg F as the number to stay below for a CHT unless I'm proven wrong elsewhere.

aluminum melts at 1,221°F, But there is probably more to it.

Re: Tuning by EGT
Actually your question is " the question". Everyone has a different thought on what temp is ideal or too hot. Years ago we ran chat gauges on 5 hp Briggs and much over 350 degrees I think and trouble was near you are getting along ok at 550? With egts I've paid more attention to them then where I was going. I think much over 1300 and things are going to melt. Was messing with my lf this winter and one cylinder would rip up to 1400 at the whack of the throttle. Hit the kill switch and costed to a stop and the plug was ghost white. Seems happy at 1250 or so. A few years ago my daughter burnt a piston in my 340/s and it runs about 1200 most of the time. Don't know where the danger zone is. About to take the gauges off and just enjoy riding ,watch were I'm going , if it blows up I'll fix it

Re: Tuning by EGT
I hear ya! I'm looking down quite often to see where I'm at. I remember my old man just taking a long run and pull the plugs to look at them. He'd just say, "That's what you want to see, a nice tannish brown. If you see something else, there's a problem". Didn't mean much to me at the time. He kinda stuck to certain temperature conditions that he liked to ride in, and didn't take it out when it was outside his "range". Must've had his carburetor tuned where he liked it, and the plugs showed the story to him. All he needed. I shouldn't worry about it like I do, cause like you said, when you're not thinking about it you enjoy the ride more!!
