Noise from drivetrain?
Noise from drivetrain?
I have a 73 JDX 4 that I rebuilt the (secondary) Driven sheave clutch on and as we haven't had a lot of snow the past few years I really haven't had it out to run much. A month ago or so I had it out and sometimes when I would get into deeper snow it would sound like it was slipping a cog or such but I thought because I was in cornstalks it had more to do with the field. I checked the chain case and the tightener was good and there was no sign of the chain slipping or loose. I had it out again today and when I got into deeper loose snow I started to get the sound again when I would increase the throttle. On the harder and level ground it didn't seem to bother. My question is could it be that some of the cogs on the track are broke off or gone to cause it jump or sound like it's slipping, or maybe the drive wheel cogs? I replaced the track maybe 30+ years ago so it's not cherry by any means. If I get a chance I'm going to check out the track and cogs tomorrow. Any ideas feel free to jump in.

Lift the rear of the machine and check the slack in the track under the center of the snowmobile. You want a little slack under the bogie wheels in the center of the machine. If the track is to loose the drive cogs will slip over the cogs in the track. Howie

I must correct my last reply. Its been a while since I adjusted a bogie suspension. Place your snowmobile on a level surface. In your tunnel in the center on both sides will be a track stabilizer attached to the tunnel. This works better with two people. Have one sit on snowmobile and your helper reach under snowmobile and see if track touches the stabilizer bracket. If it does the track is to loose. Proper adjustment is 3/8" to 1/2" above bracket. Adjust track tension to obtain this measurement. Howie

Re: Noise from drivetrain?
Howie, thanks for the suggestion on the track as when I checked on it this P.M. I didn't see any missing cogs or damage to the track so I tightened the track 5/16' or so then took it out for a run and didn't have a skip or anything. I imagine when I went through the machine 3-4 years ago I didn't tighten the track quite enough. Thanks again!!
