Liquifire trouble
I have a 440 Liquifire that we bought last year with a bad motor. It had a c clip score down one cylinder too big to bore out. We found new ones at dennis kirck scratch and dent soooooo cheap, we bought two sets one to upgrade my 340 liquifire to a 440 as well for a future project. We also bought new pistons, rings, and a complete gasket set, to complete our rebuild. Started like a charm, but it won't turn past 3000 rpm. It starts to backfire, spit bog and even quit. We put new coils and plugs and caps, but didn't help. It starts on command, but won't go anywhere. I even checked the timing with a gun. Does anyone know what is going on?????

The resistance on the stator is 2.5 k ohms for low speed, 0 ohms for high speed. Anyone know the best place to get a new stator, or can they be re-wound?

I would look at the cdi box. I had a liquifire years ago, that i tried everything on for similar symptoms, and after it all, the cdi box was the problem. I think that had the prestolite box, but cant rember, Try GPI (growth Products Inc) in crystal MI for a new one, or sport mart at 586 791 8140, Doug

OldSchoolSledder,
You could have a combination of problems. When you took the ohm readings, did you follow the guide I posted in the FAQ section. If the ohm readings are correct, your high speed windings are bad. Keep watching Ebay, DK trader puts them up now and then. Once you have a good stator, the test that Rich suggested will check the cdi box.

Thanks for the help guys. I found a brand new stator on ebay for 50 bucks. If anyone is looking for stuff, this guy has almost everything in his store (jdsleds) I think. About six pages, with everything from springs to cylinders and heads for all different types of john deere sleds. I am probably gonna replace the CDI as well. The rest of the engine is new, so why not.

Not sure if the under 1980's LIQ's have rev limiters or not...if so, check it. They do go out on the 80-81's.
