76 cyclone stator/timing

Post by spitty »

Hey guys replaced the stator and have ran out of adjustment
For advancing the timing, seems to start well and run just ok, seems a
Little flat off the line. Unit already has a Hewtech cdi on it, fuel
Is a little old in the tank, has anyone had to modify there stator
Adjustment plate to get more adjustment? Thanks Gerald

Are you checking the timing with a dial indicator and a timing light?

Hi Harley yes flywheel is marked at .096 before tdc and I'm using a timing light, replaced stator with a new old stock, engine does seem to start
Really well but I'm probably out by an inch and half but have no more adjustment on the stator plate, by the way Harley your homecast links
Dont seem work anymore. Thanks Gerald

Yea, the comcast web site was disabled a few years ago.
On all my 440 engines, the timing was dead on with the stator plate anchored in the center of the slot. Are you sure you have the crank degrees on the correct rotation of before not after top dead center?

When I replaced the stator i left the timing where it was, which was about dead center on the adjustment plate, checked timing and it appeared to be very close, my dial indicator at the time was giving me some grief though, ran the sled and when it got warm it ran worse almost like the timing was retarded, when you tried to start warm it would rip the recoil out of your hand, new dial indicator and in checking it was retarded quite alot, I advanced it in increments but I ran out of adjustment and my mark isn't lining up, I read on the hewtech site that there cdi can make it appear to advance the spark more than what it is. I was thinking about sending the original stator in to get rewound. Any thoughts? Thanks Gerald

I would have Scott from Hewtech rewind your stator. That way you are dealing with new closely matched components of your ignition.
