Are these supposed to move? (Rear Idle Aasembly)

Post by JJMAC »

1977 JD300 here. The whole rear pivot assembly is seized/fused. I sheared the bolt (#1 in schematic below) on both sides. I was finally able to get the arms off (#11 in schematic) I will have to go to a machine shop and have a new axle made with tapped ends (#17 in schematic).

Are these bushings below supposed to move freely on the arm? There are 2 of them that sit in and on the arm nipple. They are seized and will not move/separate. Does anyone know of that is as designed or should these pieces come apart for proper lube/maintenance. Thanks.

Yes, everything moves. The bolts that come in from the tensioning bracket are fine thread, and have a steel bushing on them that is just slightly longer than the tubes on the swing arms, allowing them to move. Those bushings need to be greased before the swing arms are put over them. The aluminum spacers support the springs. The pivot arm rod is nothing really special, it is a thick wall tube threaded to match the fine thread bolts.

The top pic is the assembly that went into my 73 X8. You can follow that here:viewtopic.php?f=37&t=17177

The lower pic is pretty much NOS parts on Joe Rainville's X8 project. Follow that here:viewtopic.php?f=37&t=17911

A fair amount of these spacers and such can be made. Some of these pieces are still out there NOS. Contact Joe through FB, he may have some new or used parts.
