Crankcase seals
So I pull the clutch off the X8 this afternoon, and compare the seal to the one I received from Central. Looks good, and I am satisfied with that seal ( pn 1302 ).
So then I am looking at the seals for the mag side, and the 340/5 ( all 3 are the same, pn 1333 ) While 1302 is a double lip seal, 1333 is a single. Does that sound right?
I have an NOS crank for the 440/22 in the "warehouse". I'd have to dig it out and take a look see. As long as I'm going through the motions here, I'd prefer to install the best seals available.

Didn't generate a lot of disscussion with this post
This has been bugging me. I had the feeling that there was something rotten here.
After some thought, Seems to me that only the '72s had a 25mm crank, in '73 they went to a 30mm PTO end.
Therefore, Central's seal application chart is WRONG! I'd call it a mess.
I checked JDParts.com, and my 340/5 and the 440/22 show the same two seals.
So I called my Case New Holland parts man, and gave him the dimemsions of the seals I'm looking for, stressing that I want double lip seals. He was up to his eye balls in Yamaha riders this afternoon, so he hasn't got back to me yet.

I have a Mag side seal for the 440/21. I will have to look at it and find it in my truck.
I will let you know my findings. It was bought from Central last year.
Are you panicking?

Panic? No, I have the correct PTO end seal, and the mag end seals I have will no doubt fit, I just don't particularily like them. Tell me what your seal looks like though, is it a double or single lip?
I'll tell you what is POing me, the weather! We are working on dead witches mammary!
It's too cold to work in the shop and they say it is going to get worse.
I've got the X300 seat in the house to re-cover, and I could work on the back rest in the house. But, I want to replace the seals in both sleds, and tune them to within an inch of their lives. I could aim the Knipco heater right on the sled and me and maybe get something done, but the cold weather makes everything on the farm take longer, and it physically wears you out.
Oh well, we've had temps like this before, ( I didn't like it then either ) and we survived.

Brian,
Hang in there buddy. I know how hard dairy farming is when temps are in the freezer. Manure spreader freezes up, water bowls break, milk truck needs the driveway plowed, silage unloader (silo) freezes down when you forget to crank it up, cows need to be bedded down. All this on top of regular milking and feeding schedule. I look forward to meeting you at Eagle River! We can swap dairy farming stories.
As far as the crankcase seals, I don't know if single lip seals are correct, for the 340-5 motor, but I can comment that double lip seals are preferable as a crankcase seal. They not only keep dirt and air out, they also keep the gas/oil in and provide a better seal. The newer Kawi's that are piston ported are double lip sealed on the crank. If you have a bearing distributor in your area, you can give them your dimensions and they can match up a seal for you. As is the case with bearings, sometimes Evil-bay has them at a discounted price. I buy the bearings for my suspensions on Evil-bay. A sleeve of ten 6205 bearings can shipped for $23.00. Good luck finding seals. The only caution with Evil-bay is beware of china made seals, the quality just isn't there yet. Suspension bearings surely don't last as long if you don't re-grease them yearly.

ccw mag side seals are usally 25-62-10 and pto for 73 + is 30-62-10 all the seals i have even the stock ones are all double lipped. the only single lips i can think of are steel outers for automotive applications.
note i go by seal numbers not brand serial numbers.

Yes Rodimus,
I agree with those seal dimensions.
My Case New Holland parts guy can generally find anything I need. In a pinch, I can use the mag end seal off my NOS crank, but who knows how old they are?
I'm changing the seals as preventitive mantenance, and want to use good ones.
The seals Central sent me are not adequate. On another note, I bought a new belt for the X8 from Central at the same time. I swear it looks like a 30 year old belt! Not too happy with that either.

My college girl demanded I change the oil in her car tonight, so I plugged the heater in, drove her car around the block, and ran it in and changed the oil.
Before I shut it off, I looked at the thermometer, and after about an hour of running the Knipco, it was a balmy 20 degrees in the shop! ( -10 outside ).
:o
Took a look at the seal on the PTO end of the 440/22. 30 x 62 x 10 is all there were for numbers on it.
Kenny, you've got the general idea on farming in the winter I'm looking forward to meeting all you guys, but I want to keep you between me and Rainville, because I've observed that when Joe's turds hit the fan, they seem to hit you!

Brian,
What doesn't kill you just makes you stronger! I haven't posted much here since the EZ board days. Joe and I have several stories to tell about each other. We've been ticketed together inside a State park here for no registration and insurance, I've stuffed a cleat over a rail in a 77 liquifire with a trailfire suspension (that was before we knew better). Joe has entered vintage racing events (yes, more than one) and not been able to get his sled off of the line.
If it weren't for a broken wrist suffered on Jan 14th, I would be racing on Feb 10 at the GEW. I will have 5 weeks of recovery and I will only be in a splint for the HOF ride. I'll probably have to ride like a Sally, but there will be at least two sleds riding double in our group so I hope that will slow the ride down somewhat.
Good luck with the cows, the next few days are supposed to be real cold. Let a little fresh air in the barn once in a while. These cold snaps force you tighten things up. Of course you know all that. Watch out for turds from Joe, there frozen solid!
