I'm baffled, 79' spitfire.Round 1,pulled out of shed,no start. R.2 Take apart, and clean 28mm Mik, start excellent[pull rope maybe16"]very poor mid,no top. R.3 New needle and needle jet,and new main jet, very hard to start, wants to back firelike its flooded[plugs seem too wet], however will not start unless primed, when it does start it runs excellent at idle, excellent mid ,and top end [on bench]Good spark, timing is dead on,new plugs. Must be carberation as it started perfectly before. R 4 What have I done WRONG ?
Drags this weekend ,need help Thanks, Bill

Did you change the fuel filter and put fresh fuel in it?
What about fuel lines? Did you replace them? Any other rubber lines should be replaced. The one going to the crank case from the fuel pump?

Adding new jets, etc to the carb is not really considered cleaning. Take carb back apart and soak it in a gallon of carb chem dip OVERNIGHT. Blow it dry with compressed air, blowing out all passages, reassemble. Report back. (side note:aftermarket needle/seats will cause you loads of trouble. Get an OEM mikuni)
Compression check?

Thanks guys, All new fuel lines, heavy rubber to case, and good clamps, new fuel pump kit installed as well, lots of fuel. Carb was soaked on initial rebuild, and blown out. I even turned lights off in shop and used a small light to see if passages were open, but I'm beginning to think that maybe some junk got in it the 2nd time around. I'm going to dismantle again and blow out passages . It runs great, just a bugger to start, and wants to back-fire[which didn't happen before]. Threw belt on today, and secondary won't shift properly, ordered NOS bushings and spring, will be here Friday. Not sure if parts were orig. or jobber, will ask supplier.

EUREKA!!, found problem. I finally removed flywheel, to see if I didn't have a problem in there. I did!! The woodruff key was sheared on crank, and it had moved a few degrees. Not sure why, but new key in and presto!, back to sarting like it used to. Pulls the front end off the ground easy, fine tuning tommorow.
