KEC-340
I just bought a John Deere sled and i don't know much about it other than i think it is a 73 500, although i don't think the engine is the correct one. I haven't been able to find any information on the serial numbers of the engine to buy parts or even know what i have. It says KEC-340 4912188. Any help with this would be great.
Thanks Mark

Well, a 500 should have a KEC 440 in it for one thing.

Thanks for the reply, but my guess is that someone had done an engine swap at some point. Not much i can do now, but it does run the only problem is it one spray of starting fluid and one pull to get it started when its cold but after its warmed up its fine, my guess is that the carb needs rebuilt. But thanks for the info, all the info i can get is a help to me. Your right as for the 73 500 I found the pager earlier with the numbers for the sled TYPE 5000B 012569. But i couldn't find any info for the KEC-340 4912188 engine. But i guess thats its not a big deal for the most part. Again thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure I reccommended this site to you and I'm glad to see everyone joining. If you want the right engine for your 500 I should have a 440 completely rebuilt in a couple of weeks with new gaskets and pistons if you want your sled to be original.

Unforunatly we don't have a Kioritz serial number list to find the year of the motor. It is most likely out of a 400. There are a couple things you can check to find out what year:
1) The 1972 motors had a 25 mm crank.
2) '73 had a 30mm crank, and used 1/2" reach spark plugs
3) '74 went to 3/4" reach spark plugs - this would be actually be a 340/5.
Hopefully this will narrow it down so you know what to order parts for.

I think it would be a good idea if things like your last post were put on the site.
I have searched a ton for a good info site on ccw engines, and have been unable to find anything about them. It would also be nice to have a clutching database.

All the replies have been a help, one other thing i was trying to figure out is what the fuel mixture would be for that engine. Again the engine is a KEC-340, with no other numbers after it. I found fuel mixture ratios for other engines but they all have / and another number, but nothing on the one i have. By the way what kind of money are you looking to get out of that engine you'll have rebuilt in a few weeks? Thanks for all the help.

My manual says 50:1 for those sleds, I personally would knock it down to 32:1 or 40:1 just for cheap insurance, keep in mind that if you increase the oil you may have to richen up the carburator to counteract the smaller ratio of fuel to oil.

I'd like to get $150 + shipping out of it because it will have new pistons, gaskets, seals, and most parts sandblased. If interested I can tell when when it is done.marcus121979 wrote: By the way what kind of money are you looking to get out of that engine you'll have rebuilt in a few weeks?

Still waiting for head gaskets, i'm actually working on 2 engines. Might be another week or 2 before they arrive and everthing is assembled but I hold on to one if you want it, i planned on listing them on ebay.
