twin or single?
I have been using this sled all winter and all of sudden it starts wrecking plugs(will not spark any more) on the mag side cylinder. If I pull the plugs out it won't spark even in the other boot. Fresh plugs work for five minutes then the mag side quits working. Elec short? Bad coil?

It could very well be a coil. Or it could be a bad plug cap or wire causing or contributing to the problem. The part about the used plug failing to fire in the other position, has me puzzled I'll admit.
Time to do some diagnostic work.

I have recently noticed a problem with NGK's losing spark after only a couple hours of use, found this out when working on the 80 liquifire, plugs are BR9ES. When I was trouble shooting problems with my X8, last fall is when I found the problem also, plugs were exchanged between sleds and this is when I found that problem.

Danzig, try a B9ES don't use the resister plugs, higher cost & not as good of spark,
Basketdators, does your sled have the plastic resistor wire ends?? if it does & if you don't live in Canada change to the rubber ones with the wire coil that goes over the plug end, you will get better spark. NAPA or any lawnmower repair place can order a Briggs&Straton one that is the rubber cap/wire coil end.

I went out and bought another set, this cured my problems. B9ES as Ken stated. These are not the proper plugs for a 1973 KEC440/21.

I'm laughing at the moment, I "DO" live in Canada.?????????????
New "plastic NGK" ends, checked again tonight in the dark, spark is going "up" into the plug. That's a new one on me, left cyl has poor spark as well. I think I have some old style rubber ends at the farm shop, I'll install tommorow, and report.
PS ,I'm staying away from the lottery booth these days!!
Thanks, Bill

Danzig, Don't know if "B9ES as Ken stated. These ARE NOT the proper plugs for a 1973 KEC440/21". Was directed to me or not, but if it was to only state that the R in all NGK Plugs stands for resistor nothing more, & to state only that unless someone buying NGK spark plugs are concerned about the fuzzy lines in some guys TV when you drive by his house, why wouldn't you want all the spark you could get out of a spark plug????
Basketdators, I'm aware that Canada has/had or whatever, some sort of rule, law or whatever you call them up there, that all snowmobiles be equiped with resister plug ends & or possably resistor plugs, not sure about the latter. I never really could figure out why as there is so much open land there. Maybe someone else could shed somelight on it.
No offense was intended toward your country in either post, I was only trying to point out that we used to have a lot of problems with both the plugs & plug ends of this style.
once replaced no problems, so we just atomaticly just replaced them ever sense.
Kenny

No Ken, it was not anything towards you at all. I wanted to stress that the B9ES or BR9ES are not for the KEC440/21 application. I was originally using these plugs which were not correct at all, I could have knocked a hole in the piston, but I was very fortunate that it didnt happen. The B9's are what I am using in the Liquifire.
I have had problems with these plugs right out the box not having any spark at all. I had to buy another set. This took care of my problems.

No offence taken for sure ,I was humorously puzzled. I've never heard of anylaw/regulation as such ,but I'm neither a lawyer or politician. Back to the problem,we put new plugs and new ends on this morn, same thing!. My son pulled entire ignition out again, as we'd noticed that there was wire that was slightly pinched ,but looked OK, replaced wire, one pull. My son pulled a bunch of kids on a 8ft. togoggan all afternoon. Guess we should have replaced when we saw it 1st time. We bought these cheap lilttle lites that go in line to plugs, they work great,as our spark on poor cylinder showed up instantly. Princess Auto $3.33

I doubt your going to be knocking a hole in a piston with a b9es, thats a pretty cold plug. For a my dads buddy was using b10es's in a all iron top fuel dragster....I don't think we need a plug that cold.
EDIT: The plugs that are called for, are just a guideline anyways. You are supposed to tune the plugs according to riding conditons, just like the carburetor
