Favorite Quotes from the HOF Trip

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the HOF events:

"Cari, your riding with me...and I only have 2 speeds!" -Jon Carlson threatening to take my girlfriend for a fast ride on a 340/s

"Liquidator? That doesn't sound like a very nice name" - Unknown Deere and Co. board member to RJ Carlson around 1975
"If I wanted to give it a nice name, I would have called it Bambi!" -Carslons response

"Here Cari, these are for you..." -Jon Carlson to my girlfriend after he bought her 4 raffle tickets (like I said, a class act!)

"Hey, this is funny" - Brian Nelson to me while watching "Sled-Ed" video's at the HOF

"Holly cow, your Bob Enns!" - me after meeting another ETD racer

"Hey, are one of you guys John Deere Joe, I would like to meet him" - Guest at the HOF induction cerimony to a group of us Deere Guys.
"Does he owe you money?" -Brian Linder's response to the same guy
"Did he say anything rude to your girlfriend?" -my response to same guy

"No, Wanie did not sign my chest" -me to several dinner attendies after Loren read Horicon Joe's letter out loud

"Shut Up and make me a pie!" -Matt jokingly quoting "South Park" to his girlfriend Loren

"If you say that again I will break your 'effin Jaw!" -Matts girlfriend to him after riding in my truck for way too many hours

"Ready Teddy" -giving Cari the go-ahead to hand me up a piece of Kit-Kat so I can keep driving
"TH-TH-th..." -The Waters Boy then spewing a mouth full of Mt. Dew all over the dash of my new DMax Silverado.
"Uhh, sorry man, that just hit me funny" -Kennys reason for his Dew containment failure

"If you two can't get your room (because it might be past check in time) she can stay with me!" -Loren Anderson sacrificing himself to put Cari up for the night while I sleep in a snowbank

"Milk them titties"-Loren Anderson showing the Waters Boy a Wisconsin's farmers handshake upon entering the HOF

"She's a frisky one" -Horcon Joe describing my girlfriend

"Hey, all 13 made it back!" -me, noting the return of all 13 vintage Deere's after riding around the lake for the unofficial "Ride without the Champs" vintage ride... (no snow closed the trails and cancelled the real ride, so we made due)

"It'll have 3 ski's" -Tucker Hibbert to me when I asked he and Kirk about the 08 Cat 600cc SnoCross sleds, just before I picked up my autograph bib off the table to skip a few undesirable autograph signers and set it back down for Stan Hayes.

"Where to you want me sign?" -Roger Jansen asking me were I would like him to sign my autograph bib
"Rodger, if you had a needle you could ink your name into my shoulder!" -my response

"You NOT bidding again!!" -Cari to me while holding both my hands under the table at the HOF Induction dinner, after I bid $650 and $700 on Jons leathers

"What the hell is that smell?" -Cari from the back seat of my truck
"THAT is Gary Indiana!" - informing her of the source of the stench

Later Liquidator!

Not really a quote, but watching Kirk Hibbert bid to own on a pair of deere Leathers was pretty cool. Watching 2/3 of the room raise their hand after the question was asked "Who here is with the Deere group?" was cool to.

"Feels Like home" as said by Doug Oster, after I asked him to pose for a picture on my Cross Country

After our ride around the lake, Rainville pulls Cari's helmet off with ( I swear ) a popping sound, and her dickie pulls up over her head. I lean over and ask if her head is still in the helmet. Rainville says: Cari, you are entertaining just standing still.

Matt said that the girls had been warned that the guys would "geek out" when they got to the HOF. Wed. night, Cari was standing behind Joe rolling her eyes. I asked her why she came if she found all of this lame, and she replied, "I CAME TO EAT!"

This became a running theme for the rest of the trip. If she left WI hungry, it was her own fault.

Guys,

The Wisconsin dairy farmers handshake goes this a way....with your hands in front of you palms facing your face and thumbs facing upward, weave your fingers together and then turn your palms facing outwards thumbs down. now to complete the handshake, you ask the other farmer to milk them titties! (your thumbs)

As for a favorite quote, I really liked the foot in the furrow quote by Bob Carlson at the banquet. Jon, if you find this thread, could you post that quote?

Dad's feeling is that if you stay close to the earth, and to the roots of the customer than the earth and customer will provide all the anwers needed!....Thus "Keep a foot in the Furrow".....His concern is that Deere now has relied on brand strength from it's historical "foot in the furrow beginnings" and no longer understands the earth or the customer's that work in the earth. His father was the only employee of Deere and yet a director that could still plow with a team of horses in the early 60's.......it is good wisdom for any business in my opinion. Jon

Thursday morning while Paul and I were chatting with Brian Nelson, Brian was telling us about some of the incidents he had while running the I-500 on the Dator.

I asked him if ( on the final day as they were lining up to launch ) he was feeling wiped out?

Brian relpied: NO, but the Polaris guys sure looked that way.

This was a testiment to the physical training these guys had done.

Jon: Your Dad had it right, "keep one foot in the furrow". There are not many that even know what a furrow is anymore, not even farm kids, other than the name of the magazine sent to farmers by Deere. Today it is all min-till, no-till or ridge-till, unless you farm in an area that does not dry out in the spring. The plow is pretty much history which in turn brings on numerious other agricultural challenges such as field grubs. But I know what he meant by his comment, and it did not have to do solely with planting prepration. As a Deere stock holder, I surely hope Deere will keep a "foot in the furrow", at $108/share, the look down the furrow sure looks good at the moment, along with Agco & Case/IH stock. Gasoline additives have played a big part of that. PS: The SD pheasant hunting offer is always good...........Guy

Thanks Guy, Rich, Brian.....any effort worth doing is worth doing right, study, preparation and listening are really key ingrediants to any effort.....I made sure anything I sold, I could operate, didn't believe it was right to pitch something you couldn't run......In my late 40's I had the President of CIH and the Chairman with my on a rare trip to the field, while passing corn being harvested in MN, one commented to the other that if they encouraged their friends to eat more corn the price would go up and more tractors would be sold......I remained silent as they pondered who at all the corn they saw mile after mile.....you can imagine my thoughts!
